the whole soporific, wrist-slashing cornucopia of bilge...

Weirdly, the actual sub-title of Tynwald Hansard.

Same time though....millions of viewers every week were watching Love Thy Neighbour, Alf Garnett, Mind your language and It Ain't half hot mum..and gay stereotyping at Grace Brothers.

Thankfully we now live in an era where even gay daleks and a female Dr Who are not just acceptable but compulsory now eh?

Don't forget George and Mildred and Man about the House (I think one was a spin off of the other).

Aside from Fawlty Towers, is there a funny 70s sitcom?

Porridge? They showed a few on one of the satellite channels, pre xmas - warning viewers at the start that some terms and references might now be found offensive

Notwithstanding, the show is still classic humour though, even all these years on.

Only funny in an ironic way. Olive, Mum and Arthur. Jesus tonight.

Yes, definitely Porridge. Dad's Army of course. I always liked Sykes too.

MATH came first and begat both G&M and Robin's Nest, the latter had a nifty theme tune written by the star Richard O'Sullivan.

Another great interstitial from the late lamented 6Music RadMac Afternoon Show.

Rising Damp - definitely - Good Life - probably, didn’t see it much - LotSW - I seem to recall that was just rubbish, it certainly went on too long.

I sometimes say, without evidence or even good reason, that there are only 2 great sitcoms per decade. For the 70s then I’ll go with Fawlty and Porridge. Anyone disagree?

I'm struggling to name 2 for each of the most recent decades!

ETA: That latest Cleese one was worse than Terry and June if that's possible.

There have been some real cringeworthy efforts over the years. Remember Sorry! ?? And it bleedin' well was. "Language Timothy."

......Steptoe and Son, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, It Ain't Half Hot Mum etc. Different times - different comedy.

Steptoe and Son...two blokes in cravats and corduroy, surrounded by antiques, living in a huge west London house and owning a horse. Sounds like a pitch for a Millennial sit-com “Hipster Heaven”.
