TT 2019 - Megathread

Recommended Posts

I just saw this article on the BBC regarding the use of taxpayers money on the Ulster GP.

Ulster Grand Prix safety money spent on club facilities https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-49166366

it would be interesting if us taxpayers could have a breakdown of costs allocated towards the TT, eg,  salaries, rental costs, upgrades and is money being spent on the right areas?

The video included in that report, of Rachael MacKay's feelings of loss on hearing of Jamie Hodson's death is a bit harrowing.

They knew the risks / they died doing what they loved [delete as appropriate]

Dream on mate, it'll never happen. I happen to like the TT/MGP but getting any of our elected buffoons to admit the real costs isn't going to happen any time soon. Unless of course it can further their individual careers.

Sadly, I reckon some of our money spent as taxpayers, could be more spent wisely. Unfortunately as you quite rightly put it, I would say ‘vested interests’.

CoC again been on the Government Propaganda Mouthpiece espousing the lack of Marshalls and appealing for more for tomorrow’s rearranged MGP Newcomers race.

https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/appeal-for-more-marshals-for-tuesday-racing/

If we are spending each day worrying and appealing over whether there are enough volunteers to enable the race to go ahead, maybe we are reaching the end of the races altogether?

Perhaps a more professional, qualified and salaried Motorsport Marshalls for all cycling, motorcycle and motorsports (rallying) and Trials, be established. Just a suggestion

Who would pay for them?

And between events they could be some sort of standing army of busybodies. Directing traffic on the prom, checking everybody’s using the correct bin.

Well we have a CoC who likes to spout his pronouncements as regularly on the Nations Propaganda Mouthpiece as HRH The Chief Minister. Sadly we have a state owned ferry company which is obsessed with ripping off the bikers. The CoC clearly can’t motivate existing Marshalls or he would have enough to cover the remaining races, without having to issue appeals. The Boy who Cried Wolf?

Sadly this island has its fair share of busybodies, given power they go power crazy. However, what is going to happen without fail is constant appealing for enough Marshalls. The Politicos like to try and get whatever sporting event and boast like a dick waving contest, and then when it comes to the crunch they find they haven’t got enough bodies. Rallying Enough?

Some western countries actually do this, works well.

Example: Verkehrskadetten Konstanz Hegau .

Well given that there appears to need to be hundreds of marshals required to cover the Course (no surprise given the length of it), making them 'professional' is unlikely to reduce the number needed.  So we're talking about considerable expense.  Not that that has ever bothered those running the Races and you can imagine the opportunity for the DfE to erect an enormous marshal-supervising hierarchy must be making some mouths water there.

In practice of course they'll end up awarding the contract to some firm such as G4S who will end up providing insufficient numbers of uninterested and untrained zero-hours casuals who will stand around cluelessly with occasional random interventions that make things worse.  Ever more money will be chucked at the contract because they won't want to admit how much they have cocked things up.  But management will grow, so the main aim will be fulfilled (see airport for details).

One thing I am curious about is whether some of the shortages this MGP have been caused by bikers and supporters who have been alienated by the way the Mercer affair has been handled.  I know it's technically a different organisation running the FoM, but the CoC is the same and some may see it as the same sort of operation.

So basically maintaining the status quo.
