AI, Modern Magic or Dangerous Future?

Well I'm still ploughing through the book and getting more confused than ever. The interaction with verbal and non-verbal communication fascinates me especially as my son in San Francisco is on the cutting edge of using and developing self learning communication systems, ( at least that is what I think he said). I skim around the edges to try and appreciate what he's doing and talking about but it really does get more difficult as time goes by.

As with many fields in academia, there is too much domain-specific terminology / jargon which makes it difficult for the non-specialist to assimilate. Long ago I was involved in early natural language processing and produced the first "real-time" translation system, language processing has evolved massively since then.

The sentience discussion is also so interesting and tied in with communication. A self learning, communicative, sentient system, (conscious?), without a human orientated moral code is worrying for the human race though? Maybe?

Only if it is also selfish ?

........but maybe selfish does not exist in non human terminology. I understand what you mean but if the entity just exists because it does, then  without emotion or morals, humanity is just there without meaning for the entity.

I suppose it has been argued that most living things exist just to procreate and continue to exist and evolution is just accidental.

Gosh, existential philosophy, what next?

AI is rich in rabbit holes. If an entity just exists because it does then I would expect its behaviours to appear to be selfish, continuing existence being its primary purpose. In the case of AI, a man-made entity, we can hope that we give it purpose which serves us - but if it achieves sentience that purpose cannot be guaranteed to persist. All hail to our robotic overlords ....

But just think what an incredible sex doll it would be!

.......... we seem to have gone past the tipping point where the brain is starting to give out before the body does. Hence the seeming rise in folks with dementia.

And Brexit, eh PK? ;)

That is a serious issue, or will be at some time in the future.

There is also a secondary issue.  We have come to accept and indeed want in-car entertainment -- but in BODY entertainment?  Cochlear implants are today, artificial retina tomorrow, but at some point will brain implants to the pleasure centres of the brain be available?

One way to keep the idle masses content without population growth, so it would be a logical evolution of tech.

how would you define a robot? Why does popular reference mean a human like form? When does a cybernetically implanted human become a different life form?..............Jeez, we live in strange times?

Does brainwashing of humans by AI as in modern media and home interaction units create zombies or robots?

"how would you define a robot?" - any artificial mechanism which autonomously does things for us as our agent. A software agent which goes and collects relevant news articles for us to read, a microprocessor controlled electro-mechanical machine which toddles off to the front door to collect the post when it is delivered and brings it back to us, a vacuum cleaner or lawnmower which decided for itself how to go about doing its job. A self-driving automobile ....

"When does a cybernetically implanted human become a different life form?" - When it / its actions becomes controlled by its implants?

"Does brainwashing of humans by AI as in modern media and home interaction units create zombies or robots?" - Nope, don't think so. Really not much different to brainwashing by current gov't, education & media information bombardment. We are all being intentionally programmed by external influencers from the moment we can can receive communication. Kid's TV, School, TV & Newspapers etc. etc. All it does is create brainwashed humans.

My 2d fwiw ;)  These are evolving questions just as the understanding / definition of AI is evolving.

How would I describe a robot? My son when in his late teens every time he crawled into the house smelling of burning haystacks, heading unerringly to the 'fridge muttering"need munchies" then staggering into the living room, turning the telly to Kerrang and promptly going to sleep.

He has improved over the years.

A bit.

Sooo -- does a nubile young wench with an OhMyBod going like the clappers become a cyborg?  Or does she just look like one on xhamster (allegedly)

Guess who's having a silly half hour!
