"Today's session starts with a round table on housing and population policy..."

My prediction is that at the end of the day, there will be no population policy as such, in the sense of setting a target for what we want the population to be.  Setting a target would be too much like making a decision, and we want to avoid making decisions at all costs.  Instead we will hear vague aspirations like "grow the economically active population" and "make adequate provision for households" which is the kind of language you will find in the discussion documents like the "Draft Plan - Household size and population projections paper - 25th May 2018".

What's the point of having a population target? When we had 85,000 in 2010 they set a target of about 95,000 by 2026. In 2016 it had reduced to 83,500 but they are still planning for the 95,000. It's crackers. What are they going to do for work if they come in the first place?

not sure what happened there..and this is just a big white wash and waste of time and money.   All our villages are being turned into dormitory towns and there is sod all we can do to stop it.   Douglas will become a dump with empty houses in every street because it is easier to get a mortgage for a new box type property than one that needs some attention.   The people buying houses on the new estate beware it is above the snow line, is windy as f.... and will cost a fortune to heat.

Are we looking at the general attitude towards house construction and design now being similar to everything else in our consumer-driven market?

Namely, short use and throwaway disposable. If they're "built to last" as we were all brought up to believe was a good thing back in the day, then after years newer owners are faced with considerable upkeep costs.

It could be argued that what's being put up now will have a much shorter lifespan but could be "disposable" in construction and market terms although the pricing in such a consideration might be another matter?
