Trouble on the Buses

Recommended Posts

I heard that they were struggling for drivers a couple of weeks ago. Maybe not yet resolved?

Maybe they need to increase the drivers wages again?

That's very true. The flexible contract bus drivers are only paid about £10 or £10.50 an hour. It's no wonder they may not be inclined to work on a given day (they have a choice) when the pay is so rubbish.

Maybe they could use some of the “dial a ride” minibuses parked up empty round the island to backfill routes

As the drivers wouldn’t take the £25K bung to change their contracts they’re not giving them the weekend hours on the massive hourly rates under the old contracts anymore. So we have a bus company that is literally tripping over empty buses and minibuses but which now won’t pay drivers to actually drive buses to provide a bus service to people who need to use a bus.

So once again service to the end user/customer is hit in the name of "savings". Just like the loss of Saturday letter post deliveries. Although there's no decrease in charges and costs to those end users. Or no doubt we should be ecstatic at the reasoning that the prices aren't going up instead?

Remind me again, how much has Ian Longworth spent since he's been here..?

The management thought they could compensate by using the flexible contract staff during weekends, but they're under no obligation to work on a given day. It has backfired in their faces. That said, it could also be argued that some people with a vested interest (and close ties with UK-based private operators) might be intentionally engaged in disrupting public service delivery, to undermine public confidence in the service, so they can then use it as a pretext to eventually push to privatize it.

In addition to this I watched a prog on TV last night which included a bit on re-built buses. New insides and re- furbished mechanics plus a re-spray. So 12 years extra use for short thousands! Sounds better than new buses every few years then maybe there would be some cash left for a good service to customers.
