When was Leicester multicultural?

Proof of ignorance provided.  If there was any justice this should be a prerequisite for leaving not joining a thread but sadly in the real world all you can do is request “learn something of a subject before asking of it”.

I think anyone looking to be an MLC should have some political experience or some experience in law if they are supposed to be overseeing laws etc., I also think they should be culled to to five at the most and no Bishop.

I think they should be got rid of altogether.

The upper house is a gilded cage for failed MHK's with a penchant for trousering lots of taxpayers money for doing little of value and bored folks who fancy hobby politics without the drag of canvassing and getting elected....

At one point it was a vehicle for MHKs to move upstairs after so many years service as an MHK.

Then it became a vehicle for failed, underperforming and ridiculed MHKs, a form of lifeboat for them and ensured that MHKs had their definition of right candidate for the role.

Now it has become a laughing stock, still a home for failure and political patronage, or collective nepotism and cronyism. It’s made worse by the supposed job definition that it’s encouraging legislation scrutiny etc. By that definition the upper chamber could then be home for Athol Streets finest failures. Or why not give the roles to current serving members of the judiciary - First or Second Deemster, High and Deputy High Bailiff. Look at the mess the Keys made of Micheal Moyle! On the other hand, it’s still a nepotism and cronyism based vehicle judging by the candidates currently standing. It’s either the HRH The Chief Minister and Alfie Cannon nominated numpty, or the Beecroft-Costain or whatever your called this minute, and Allinson/Barber Show whereby they submit their mates. It’s CRONYISM!!!!! and it stinks. To think there are many residents who hold their MHK and MLC in high regards and esteem - deference, like the days of the serfs doffing their caps and tugging their forelocks to their masters.

A suggestion - that elections are held by the public for 8 MLCs serving for a period of 5 years. The salary should be reduced due to less workload but the term served would be longer. Perhaps we could encourage, retired older people - late 50s and 60s. No more retired civil servants, no more retired politicos. No more quotas, no more tick- boxes. Are we now to have a quota for LGBT+, Religious Diversity and Gender Politics? Let the public decide, if they screw it up, then they shoulder the blame.

The MHK and MLC Manxmen and women of the island have become knotted in their own runaround styles and most appear to have taken on the quieter route of survival. Follow your trusted long haul 'Do it my way' representative and seek the treasured pension pot and the little luxuries that can be found if you follow 'their way' and forget the little people of the island as they're not worthy of listening to! Thats what they're coming across as!

They're looking after the industry giants and best buddy friends, using the media for misinformation purposes and have lost the ears and eyes of the people.

IMO, time to take a step back guys and it may upset a few big ego cheeses, but time to start listening to the people and do the simple things that made the island what it was. There's some good ideas out there and they don't all have to be futuristic

Leicester is a hugely multicultural city. Some suggestion on IOM Today comments that Ms Hoosen  left Nobles and launched a UD claim

I'd be comfortable with the upper house appointing retired Deemsters/High Bailiffs. No salary as their pensions are more than adequate but pay them an attendance fee
