Of course it doesn't but presumably even you would accept that it could have been read that way?

Only by the ESN (Educationally Subnormal aka Window Lickers) or more likely those out to make mischief.

Please explain how you interpret the statement on the side of that bus?

Are you serious?  It's bloody obvious.  There are two entirely seperate matters involved.

One is the minimum cost of membership of the EU.

The other is how we would be better spending that money on the NHS.

There was absolutely no claim or promise or hint of ANYTHING that the money saved would be used to add funding to the NHS just that there were better uses it COULD be used for.

In which case it was missing a full stop and the capitalisation of let's.

We send the EU £350 million a week let's fund our NHS instead

or

We send the EU £350 million a week. Let's fund our NHS instead

Personally, I don't think they were promising £350 million a week to the NHS but poor sign writing/grammar does make it ambiguous. The campaigns of both sides were not great.

Not the fucking bus again!

Play petty semantics all you like, presumably there's little else to do in dull flat boring Norfolk, but the message came across EXACTLY as intended.

It is also blindingly obvious, what with record waiting times and bed blockers, that the NHS and Social Care have been underfunded. Of course, all the alt-right racist wankers will claim it's "immigrants" using up resources without any evidence whatsoever if they're paying NI or not. Our wonderful "austerity" government will, as per usual, say how they're putting "record" amounts of public money into Health. Presumably in the hope that Joe Public is so stupid they won't realise that if it's not enough then the service is being deliberately underfunded...

It also seems to me that the lethality of Covid-19 is something of an unknown. So with no real measurements a "measured response" is just a bit tricky.

I would like to see an effective co-ordinated response to this so that when a highly lethal nasty gets out there, which it inevitably will over time, what to do will then be the tried and trusted.

Of course, right now all the microbiology research organisations will be throwing lots of €resources at Covid-19 because the one that cracks it can name their own price.

What a reassuring thought....

Direct and indirect lies and false statements were made by both sides in the referendum campaign but that's the exact slogan on the bus. One would have to be rather arrogant not to accept that it might be read as giving the NHS 350 million every week. At best it is ambiguous (perhaps deliberately).

It's not semantics, petty or otherwise.

As for COVID-19 the astronomical cost of developing a vaccine, if indeed one can be developed, has to be recovered. A great many labs will be trying and failing at their own cost.  Moreover the promise of high returns for success is a great motivator which if it results in success warrants high spend at high risk that benefits everyone.

The master of the obvious.

Not necessary.

I hope this disease without borders doesn’t kill people because of petulant refusal to ensure Europewide healthcare agreements, the free-flow of medicines, equipment and staff, and the rejection of collaborative approaches to dealing with epidemics. I hope we’re not relying on the misfits, morons and flat-earth, anti-vax, climate-change denying, eugenics pushing ‘scientists’ of Cummings’s Whitehall to deal with the coming pandemic. It’s going to really push Sir Nige’s and Rog’s faith in doing without experts.
