Coronavirus Isle of Man

These are the measures which will be announced next week according to Peston.

https://www.itv.com/news/2020-03-14/elderly-to-be-quarantined-for-four-months-in-wartime-style-mobilisation-to-combat-coronavirus/

Quote

People over 70 will be instructed by the government to stay in strict isolation at home or in care homes for four months, under a "wartime-style" mobilisation effort by the government likely to be enforced within the next 20 days.

It is part of a series of measures being prepared by the prime minister, health secretary, chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser to prevent the health service from "falling over" and to save lives as Covid-19 becomes an epidemic in the UK.

Other measures already being planned include:

  • the forced requisitioning of hotels and other buildings as temporary hospitals;
  • the requisitioning of private hospitals as emergency hospitals;
  • temporary closure of pubs, bars and restaurants - some time after next weekend's ban on mass gatherings;
  • emergency manufacture by several companies of respirators that would be necessary to keep alive those who become acutely ill;
  • the closure of schools for perhaps a few weeks, but with skeleton staff kept on to provide childcare for key workers in the NHS and police

It's just as well Corbyn did not become PM.  He would have to be quarantined at his age.

Politicians of all ilk have a degree of safety and immunity.

Any self-respecting microbe would avoid.

We do not have a case yet but that's probably because we are not testing enough people .

For example look at Jersey who only have a population slightly more than  ours.

https://opendata.gov.je/dataset/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-jersey?_ga=2.260607758.2005024065.1584130507-98187674.1584130507

They have tested around 167 and have 2 positive cases .

Compare this with the IOM where we have only done 29 tests..

https://www.gov.im/coronavirus

And as far as I am aware they have stopped testing unless you end up in hospital.

Thankfully the Labour Party have already started that process.

Alternatively, as Jersey is closer to France where it’s really kicking off, and they have a far higher population density than us, it’s perhaps not surprising that they have more tests done and a couple of positive cases.

IOM are following Public Health England’s guidance on testing - cost saving doesn’t come into it, although logistics dictates tests take a little longer from swab to result than over there.

Wrighty, can I ask how is morale up there? I know it isn't your department, but are the staff just waiting for the seemingly inevitable of someone rocking up with the illness? I could imagine that would be a little bit frustrating, daunting almost.

Thanks for your updates.

I now notice various events being cancelled on MR.    This is a time the nation’s station could shine and keep the public informed, especially the golden generation who look as if they are going to be under house arrest in the not so distant future, about events and even have a help line going.   Keeping people’s spirits up especially those who are frail and unsure would be a great way forward.   A lot of people are not on Facebook and need contact with what is going on.

Absolutely. The people stacking their trollies high and snatching toilet roll out of peoples hands should be ashamed of themselves. Some of the elderly live literally hand to mouth each week on their pensions and can't afford to stockpile food.

We should all be looking out for each other and making sure our neighbours, who were around in genuine hard times during the war are okay, not the 'I'm alright Jack' attitude we see from the Facebook generation.

Peston is getting a kicking on Twitter, with his non-attributable ‘sources tell me’ approach.

What he is doing is actually driving the hysteria. People are undermining Government by providing these ‘off the record’ briefings to him.

Ethically he should push back, but it would be career suicide.
