The Royal George Ramsey? Just seen the announcement myself, closed until Tuesday so missing out on busy weekend trade, which just means folk will crowd into a neighbouring pub instead.

So far with each mutation/variant the virus appears to get more transmissible but less deadly, it’s difficult to tell how much of this is the vaccine doing the work and how much is the virus just burning itself out.

That's not quite right, unfortunately.  It's true that the new variants are a lot more transmissible, but they don't seem to be any less deadly, probably more.  The reasons seems to be linked to their producing higher viral loads.

Of course what has made the difference is vaccines which have reduced the deadliness of all variants massively (though even there, there are indications by maybe a bit less with Delta).  But the virus hasn't changed its characteristics to become less lethal.  I suspect the more transmissible/less deadly trade-off only applies where the initial levels of fatality are much higher than with Covid.

@Piemanshould have had result by now. Phone them to ask

Been on hold for over an hour and not even got a number in the queue.
tbh just worried now we won’t be able to get off island if we don’t get the test result. And if we can leave where do we go between check out time and 3pm ferry?

Just from the recent Facebook comments it seems people have been on the phone to 111 waiting for over 2 hours before they even got a number in the queue, apparently it only starts counting down from 30, lots of people have just given up, some have got through only to be told they’ll get a call back, what a shambles.

Shoddy treatment there Pieman.

I hope one of the Government shils is reading this thread and will arrange for your complimentary Grandstand seat, accommodation etc for you and daughter TT 2022

Nah, just cough a lot and you get a compartment to yourself. Mate’s from Ballabeg so we’re solid.

I think you’re wrong with your binary definition of a herd.  Your view implies a homogeneous population where any person is equally likely to encounter any another in the group.  It isn’t like that. There is of course some mixing between groups, but it’s far less than within a group - consider a class in a school, they’ll each have about 30 potential contacts in the group, but only two or three outside of it.  The concept of community immunity applied to humankind is more complex than when applied to cattle, and having cohorts of people who don’t mix a whole lot with outsiders, with sufficient levels of vaccination to be at ‘herd immunity’, is a useful concept.

Oh I appreciate all that and it explains why some of the more simplistic modelling went wrong.  But while such things may affect the rate and the way in which disease spreads, they don't really affect whether there is herd immunity or not, because by definition that has to be for the whole population to provide the protection and it's a longer term aim.

In fact such cohort effects may actually make things worse, as the disease spreads fast in the section of the population that doesn't have immunity and then has many more points of contact to get into the rest of the population.  Herd immunity isn't effective unless it suppresses all potential outbreaks.

It's also worth reinforcing the fact that herd immunity is for everyone - especially in cases where the disease still can infect those who have been vaccinated, though at a much lower level.  It protects the 5% who can't/won't be vaccinated, but also the 95% who are, but still have that much reduced chance of not just infection but serious damage.  Because even a low chance of that happening over 95% of the population will be a lot of people if they all continue to be exposed.

Been on hold now for 42 mins and not even got a number in the queue yet. More worried now about getting off the island. If the test result isn’t with us, can we leave, and what do we do between the 11am check out and 3pm boat?

Update. We have now been on hold for 1h 32 and are 24th in the queue!

system is overwhelmed by the looks of it

Why can you not book a test online ffs. Its 2021.

Because they insist on triaging callers rather than just booking them in for a test. It seems to be a way to keep the testing numbers down.
