Because there have been calls to allow people to come over for short duration visits on compassionate grounds without quarantine. I hope this news from NZ shows why, for the time being at least and difficult as it is, these visits  should continue to be prohibited.

Yes best leave it at least 5 years before we start opening up because some minor event happened on the other side of the world. Half the island will have eaten the other half out of necessity by then anyway and there will be plenty of jobs for any survivors!

Well it’s always good to get advice from an acknowledged expert.

The failure and risk here is around testing when landing really.  For the Isle of Man if Covid 19 is still lingering in large quantities around the world then it would make sense to test people coming in and for them to isolate whilst the results are awaited.  It is going to be something we may have to live with for many years and the answer certainly isn't to stop all travel.

Some idiots would support stopping all travel

A sensible middle ground might be for anyone arriving to go into some sort of holding area for a couple of weeks. Perhaps one of the former hotels could be re-purposed?

Any new cases will send the island back into lockdown which would clearly be hugely damaging for the economy.

Going back into lockdown won't be an option going forward.

There will be cases from time to time and the island will be set up to cope with it.  It simply isn't practical or possible to head in and out of lockdown every time a few cases pop up.

Similarly the world isn't simply going to eradicate Covid 19 and life will need to go on.

As for borders here right now it makes sense to review at the end of June and given the trajectory of things elsewhere I would say by the end of July things should be back up and running.
