OK. For what it's worth I'm going to try and explain why genomics is important in a ssRNA virus epidemic. No doubt it will end up being recited badly at a briefing, but, well, whatever. You read it he

Rachel has tried every which way to re-offer her services. This last tweet wasn't the first time she's reached out. Government has made it very clear they do not want her to be involved. I want h

I think you'll find most so called anti-government rhetoric is focused on government-stupidity and government-selfishness. In recent times - under Brown, Bell and now Quayle - all too many govern

Assuming they can announce 500+ negatives by the 11AM briefing today, I'm sure they'll laud that as a success.

One for @rachomics here but it is highly probable that someone could test negative over the last few days but positive in 4-5 days time?

Aa Liverpool found out during their mass testing campaign, a negative result can lead to complacency when actually they are carrying the virus, just not yet shedding.

I think a more sensible approach would be an insistence of anyone who was at the busiest venues- 1886, Casino - to isolate for the coming week and not test people for a few more days yet. This knee jerk reaction to a large amount of testing has scope to backfire.

I can't help but think that Howard was keeping quiet until the genome analysis had been completed in Liverpool. IF it shows to be the new strain, then as Dr Glover has rightly pointed out, it won't show a positive result until much later in incubation (day 10-14).

Rachel posted on Twitter that she reckoned the 6th to the 8th would be the most likely dates for positive tests

There's a lot of words being said, but I couldn't tell you what they are. Blah blah blah.

Howard is in full on defence mode here. A lot of this seems written by the AGs office.

Basically stop panicking, there’s no issues, we are not closing anything and get back to normal. 111 we’re giving out conflicting information and shouldn’t have been offering tests

Johnson is quoted by the BBC this morning as saying that yet more stringent English regional Covid controls will likely be required ‘in the weeks and months ahead’. This is almost certainly the case. As that is a matter intimately linked to the levels/rates/prevalence of infections in England (and of course UK) which, in turn, is the prime determinant of our border control regime, whereas I appreciate that this is an entirely ‘piece of string’ question, as a new year prediction game, and recognizing the vaccine factor, when do each of you consider that IOM border controls will be fully removed so as to permit access to anyone who wishes to visit? My prediction - 31 March 2022.

Dr Ewart is very good. But she is wrong.

the view that a majority would be shedding by day 5/6 is completely wrong with the new strain and she seems either out of her depth or under the thumb by politicians.

Are you a senior medical expert or do you get it from Facebook?

Retired medical expert. Albeit not in infectious diseases. But then, neither is Dr Ewart.
