Your namesake might have, but todays MHK's, MLC's and Tynwald office I believe have to pay for Parking. There are plenty still with their noses in the trough who voted to make the disabled pay for their parking whilst retaining free parking for themselves. So no, I'm not wrong on this because it happened. Why anyone would try and make excuses for them and their appalling actions is beyond all... So why do you bother? Apathy really rules, probably because they know this shower of .......... will actually take the increase. Now really isn’t the time for increases, grandstanding or look at me I’m something special, I’m Important. True, no one could have predicted the Coronavirus pandemic and the its outcomes. However our shower of elected ......... really only understand grandstanding and gesture politicking. HRH The Chief ‘I’m wealthy and don’t need the money’ Minister and Poor Little Alfie fond of weekly or twice weekly virtual Tynpotwald sessions. They could have put a motion to defer the increase to as soon as is practicable. Perhaps the Civil Service too, might like to make a sacrifice as after all it’s like many Manx businesses will fold in the coming months. Pubs, Clubs and Retail - either changes will occur or closure - reduced business less footfall, more unemployment.

I would be more concerned, how cheap it is to park. if they only charged the people prince £348.99 a year to park. That is under a £1 a day for a parking space. Golfer
According to reports one third of island population have said their income has had a material reduction and unemployment is going up. why then do politicians agree an inflation busting rise for themselves and all public sectors??

Unemployment figures will be out in a few days. They won’t be able to hide the scale of the problem. The gas board didn’t miss a trick either. Almost immediate invocation of a 20% across the board pay cut for all staff. Even though they sell the most expensive gas in Europe. Government hasn’t got a clue.

The only places that will be doing well out of this (globally) are food processors and manufacturers, energy suppliers and communications/data concerns. That's what populations are limited to using, whilst receiving much reduced income. Big corporations. Who pay very little tax under international tax avoidance facilitated by regimes who favour that approach in order to competitively attract their business. If these concerns end up with all the money (simplistically speaking) that will have to change if Governments want to recoup what they've had to expend in order to keep economies alive.

Many of the railway workers are on even better rates of pay now they’ve been moved to hospital security. Plenty getting more overtime too while the world turns to absolute crap for everyone else. You do question what you pay taxes for as clearly they have no intention of supporting anyone through any of this. All it’s going to create is more people the folk at Markwell House can look down their noses at. They’ll still treat you like some sub human sponging peasant even if this is the first time you’ve ever had to set foot in there and have paid taxes for 30/40 years previously. It looks like a really extreme form of financial apartheid has hit. 1
Golfer
I know some public sector workers have been redeployed but there's many who haven't and are doing nothing for their big wage packets! a lot of teachers I know are just spending the time walking, gardening, cycling etc with only a small amount being utilized to teach key workers. Should get schools back open with zero cases last week.

What evidence do you have that PSWs who haven't been redeployed are still getting their full wage? Do you have any evidence as to how many PSWs are not working? What evidence do you have that those who haven't been redeployed, haven't been redeployed because they're still working their usual jobs? What evidence do you have that teachers who aren't currently working are getting their full wage? Genuinely curious.

You'd have thought that the extraordinary circumstances of a global pandemic would allow for changes to the contracts - such as the payment cap that has been placed on other sectors. I have to admit I don't know much about the terms and conditions of employment for PSWs. While I have a family member who is a teacher, they're a supply teacher and obviously different rules apply. Edited to add.. Basically they're on what amounts to a zero-hours contract. Edited April 27, 2020 by Zarley
