Friend had a letter from RGS, as their lad was going back on the 15th June. Now been told that they will not be going back until at least 22nd June as they haven't got the school prepared for the students yet. You've only had 10 weeks to do something!

Anyway enjoy your 2 weeks off. Only 4 weeks of school left and then you can have another 6 weeks off. I didn't want to get all bitter about it, but I am now because my business is fucked.

Unfortunately they have little concept of what the issues are for real world people. They’ll be paid whatever at least through to September. Working ot not.

What's your business?

Any chance you can get assistance from government?  Summer clubs will be open I suspect so perhaps an option there to allow you to work?

I assume they are having to be prepare on the basis of the current advice which is 2 metres SD, which I think everyone except the unions know cannot work. I would hope that lessening SD to 1 metre, or frankly scrapping SD in the school environment altogether may change their timescale. Don't worry though, it is only our children's education...

I'm self employed. I work with clients all over the world, I just can't service them as they require because I'm looking after my two young children all day. While I have no shortage of work available, I'm having to turn down all work at the moment. Some clients have understandably gone elsewhere on my suggestion and although there's good relationships, getting them back may prove more difficult in the future. I'm eating into my savings, which is my business runway. Have a mortgage holiday but that will run out soon. Will look into summer clubs, thanks.

Government said I didn't qualify in any of their sectors and to just sign on for JSA. No thanks.

Wish I was a gardener. Maybe I will be by September.

Did anybody in any sector actually qualify?

There seems to be quite a small window of eligibility for self-employed as regards Govt support. I know a couple of perfectly legit guys with no shortcomings in previous contributions etc who were turned down on the grounds that their particular trades just didn't appear on the Govt list of eligible trades.

I think the official number was around 650 applications turned down or had some sort of other reason why they couldn’t qualify.

Wasn't there a Govt/Treasury statement a couple of weeks back to the effect that they'd "only" handed out £60M out of an originally projected £600M in support?

There’s a real lack of clarity around the numbers. They paid out a lot less than they expected to that’s for sure but whether their projections were over cautious I don’t know. Excluding financial services and e-gaming has taken a lot of the potential cost away I’d suggest and left it to the companies to decide whether they’re going to fund people. That’s probably fine for the banks, CSPs and the insurance cos as their income hasn’t been hit too bad yet. But several sports betting companies hoofed people out pretty quickly and none of their (ex) staff can claim anything more than JSA is my understanding as the sector is explicitly excluded from support. Getting the building industry back to work early helped too I’d suggest which would be another saving. Then there was the self employed chancers who were paying no NI by paying themselves via dividends. They got nothing either but then again why should they?

Parallels with the enterprise development scheme run by Spark impact.
