gettafa 6,542
I get two pop ups, and then the same for every page visited after that. Something is a bit shit, and I just avoid IoM Newspapers websites.
ThreeRaccoonsInATrenchCoat 86
Manx Radio, BBC Isle of Man, Energy FM, and MTTV are all vastly superior to IOM Newspapers. There are no real journalists or journalism with IOM Newspapers.
Apple 653
You would be surprised where health information gets shared with. Financial Times did a report a few weeks ago and plotted where the UK sends it to. Seems the UK NHS can sell it for around £10 billion a year to drug and insurance companies, and various others. Hope it isn't coming here, is it....

I only really started paying attention to the Isle of Man newspapers in about the 2000s and am genuinely interested to know if there was a time in recentish history when the newspapers on the Island were much better. In particular, did things start going south around the time Johnston Press? I do have a bit of sympathy for IOM Newspapers. I'd imagine that they're are in a difficult position in having the resources of a U.K. local newspaper (with which their efforts aren't that bad in comparison), but having duties closer to that of a national newspaper. I'd imagine that they're are in a difficult position in having the resources of a U.K. local newspaper (with which their efforts aren't that bad in comparison), but having duties closer to that of a national newspaper. Johnston Press certainly didn't help, they were always madly over-leveraged because they bought so many titles at the height of the newspaper boom and just milked their more profitable locals in places like the Isle of Man to pay for the borrowings. They also were subsidising the national paper they did own (the Scotsman) as a national paper even though it was only selling 2-3 times what the Examiner did (despite Scotland having 60-odd times the population). So staffing has been minimal for many years and they simply don't have people to do the sort of standard thing like court and local authority reporting that they did do years ago. And as you say they have national responsibilities that they can't even begin to cover. Things have got a bit better since Tindle bought them, but Tindle have always specialised in hyper-local and being non-political, neither of which really fits with the role IOM Newspapers should have. They're more usable online than they were, but the websites of most British local and regional papers are so terrible even on the most basic technical level, that it's not really much of a compliment. Despite the way we all complain about them, I don't think they do too bad a job given the constraints. Certainly they produce more than Manx Radio and especially BBC IOM do with better resources.

I rest my case. The spelling and grammatical mistakes are a problem, especially on the website. I suspect a mix of understaffing and too-restrictive deadlines is preventing the necessary amount of copy editing and reviewing taking place. I can't remember whether it was MR or IOM Newspapers, but one of the weirdest examples of botched presentation I've ever seen from a news organization was an instance where the journalist had taken a picture of their grubby monitor screen, complete with a fuzzy reflection of themselves, instead of just taking a screenshot. I rest my case. It's actually in the byline in bold, so it may have been done by whoever did the layout rather than reporter[1]. If your surname is a misspelling of a normal word then you're going to spend your life having it 'corrected' by other people. 4 hours ago, VinnieK said: The spelling and grammatical mistakes are a problem, especially on the website. I suspect a mix of understaffing and too-restrictive deadlines is preventing the necessary amount of copy editing and reviewing taking place. A lot of the website stuff is just straight from article in the paper. They often even leave the cross-heads in as one-word paragraphs. Very little is proofed or even reread because the people aren't there. At one time local papers would have a full column in each issue listing all the employees and how to contact them, but it's down to a mere handful and you get rewarded for quantity not quality. But the situation isn't much better with the London national press I actually find it more annoying with Manx Radio who consistently make such mistakes (including using words they clearly don't know the meaning of) but never correct anything. Given that they have to produce many fewer words it's not really acceptable. Weekends are particularly bad. They're also much slower than other sources. For example with the Ellan Vannin fire (which was Sunday am) they didn't get something up till this morning - even 3FM managed something by last night. [1] Possibly someone not even employed by IOM Newspapers or even Tindle - a lot of this stuff (and proofreading) is done remotely by freelancers.
ThreeRaccoonsInATrenchCoat 86
Their lack of familiarity with the English language is the least of their problems. Even if they wrote with perfect grammar, spelling and punctuation, the tedious third-rate content would remain.
