Donald Trumps
We don't need a high profile president Unless the island becomes a republic
Shake me up Judy
The position was created for the first President of Tynwald, Sir Charles Kerruish. It was his idea.

joebean
The President post would sit very well with Mr Watterson. It is a post that requires a bit of pomp and ceremony and the encumbant is required to do little of significance. Juan has the qualifications, being incredibly pompous and having achieved nothing of any real value since he came into politics, or before. This would be an ideal time to review the need for a President of Tynwald, but the prospects of this Government reviewing or changing anything, particularly if it might result in efficiency or cost-saving are extremely slim. Oh well, we can look forward to another 5 years of dressing up and looking like a twot whilst assuming an importance that nobody outside of the Tynwald club recognises. The slide towards irrelevance will continue, but who cares, really?
Donald Trumps
It's an expensive (to us) role, it's not democratically elected, It serves little obvious constitutional purpose, the holders tend to enjoy dressing up and gadding off around the world to pontificate at meetings of various Commonwealth bodies which we're not rightly members of, damaging the environment as they go It's a position that has had it's day & should be disposed of 7

Having said that he enjoys one inarguable qualification for appointment - he isn’t that droning Caledonian arse Rodan. 2
hissingsid
The fellow who got done had not given a lecture to the great unwashed that morning telling them not to drink too much and not to misbehave and the importance of celebrating in a proper manner....two faced, hypocrite...that is what spewin Juan is. We do not need a President of Tynwald it was a role created for Charlie Kerruish. The fact that he got so drunk that he spewed on a public vehicle was bad but the hypocrisy is the thing that is unforgivable, totally, he is a young man, lessons have been learned..total rubbish.. If he thinks people will forget.....not a chance.
ian rush
After 15 years he realises he'll never be Chief Minister. He does get to dress up though, so not all bad for him.

He’s a big fan of grandiose uniforms - I’d support the retention of the President role so long as Spewin’ agreed to wear costumes from 70s sci-fi series, starting with Space 1999, then Blake’s 7 and finally as one of the Angels from Captain Scarlet. 1
P.K.
IMHO Watterson is the epitome of everything that is wrong with Tynwald. It's not just the demeaning of his post and that of his colleagues with that disgraceful episode on the bus. But it does give a good, solid, starting point to the fact he cares so little about the gravitas of his position and those who voted for him that resigning was simply not an option. When you add to that his pechant for jetting off to sunnier climes four square and all found to dress up and ponce about like some latter day Little Lord Fauntelroy when he should be available to field the issues of his constituents (you know - the job he's paid to do) then it's obvious where his priorities lie. The really telling insight and proof, if proof were ever needed, of his completely self-centred attitude is when he overcame obstacles, like cancelled flights, to get himself and others to the South Atlantic. There are absolutely no synergies between the Falkland Islands and Mannin except for the fact that like islands everywhere they are surrounded by water. Which means, of course, that there was no justification whatsoever for going there. But that didn't bother Watterson. He likes to dress up so I have to wonder if he wore combat DPM to tour the battlefields which I suspect was the only reason to make him that desperate to get there. Inevitably on his return he banged in the most pathetic, penny-pinching X's imaginable which says it all about his mindset. No thank you... 9

asitis
It is clear that the island is run at a level somewhere remote from our Politicos ! There is an unarguable case that there are too many of them and the attached pomp and circumstance just add to the cost. If any of them had even the remotest interest of the island at heart they would take an opportunity to reform and get a grip on the Civil Service and themselves, it is however one self serving gravy train whose achievements do not reflect its cost ! 1
2bees
Great thread MF’ers! Thanks for brining this to the attention of the general public OP. I will email my MHK today, he’s a canny lad and will probably think getting rid of the post is a thrifty and wise idea. As for army wannabe, spew boy Wann, blah - shut up and go away. The idea of having a wedding cake made in the shape of the Tynwald wedding cake building would have been ace if it hadn’t been his wedding cake, pompous hasn’t been used enough in this thread but it’s 100% appropriate.
