Sigh. Why is it that we have to wait for a major incident (jail, controversy on the world wide stage) before someone realises that perhaps expecting workers to come from the U.K. to a different j

Some kid that thinks he's Superman is still going to think he's Superman after he has been fined (forget warnings, they're right out the window). Yes, he's still going to think he's Superman when he is sitting in jail but at least the rest of society knows exactly where he is.

What’s Superman got to do with sitting on a sofa with girlfriend, buying a sandwich or seeking refuge at a homeless shelter?

All of them. It's about attitude. You don't have to wear your underpants outside your trousers to think you are Superman.

Aye, all of those.

Still a fine you idiots & higher than the other Guernsey one as the former went to several pubs as opposed to one!! No immediate jail term like here

Look at the number of people he put at risk. All those pubs....all those pubs eh.

Maybe he should have been given 2 weeks straight away.

Like the good ol' Isle of Man

Fining isn't effective. Not in a pandemic.
Just read what this guy did. He demonstrated why he needed to be jailed.

You might be different. And that Sultan fella too. But the laws aren't made for just you. They are made for everybody. Jail is what you get.

Are people not reading the article? He's in jail to at least 15 weeks. He can reduce his sentence a bit if he manages to pay some of the fine, which is unlikely as he's on UK incapacity benefit.

The very first paragraph:

Quote

A MAN who arrived from a red-category area and went on a pub crawl instead of self-isolating has been sent to prison for up to 15 weeks after being unable to pay a £5,900 fine.

Emphasis mine.

So they’re now checking inside your own house where you sit? That’s totally fucked up. We are truly North Korea. Could have been dealt with with a warning / fine / penalty but fucking prison for sitting on your own sofa? That is literally insane.

You just don’t get it. That is worrying

Ok I’ll bite just out of interest. So in what way has sending this man automatically to prison for 4 weeks (and destroying his ability to earn a good income and his career prospects for the rest of his life) been effective in abating the spread of COvID-19 in the IOM over issuing him with a warning, a chunky fine, or some other sort of civil penalty?

That was multiple offenses, this is the one I posted . Went to pub , got £800 fine compared to the way we jail for buying a sandwich with face masks on or someone going to a shelter. There’s no comparison, our lot are just jail crazy and I would expect some investigation or damages claims when all this is over

The policy doesn’t get results unless you think locking up people for mount breaches, costing the tax payer thousands for jail and massive negative PR is a result?

It will cost the taxpayer many more thousands if some non-isolating bozo introduces covid back into the community and we don't find out until it's already spread exponentially. A stay in Noble's ICU is far more costly than a stay at the Jurby Hilton.

Not to mention the economic cost of the lockdown that community spread would no doubt bring.

Mea culpa. I didn't realise it was a different article.

However... That article is four hours old. He has to pay the fine immediately - like the first guy - and like the first guy, it doesn't sound like he can pay either. So he's likely going down too.

He blatantly broke the rules, either through stupidity or Just plain thinking he knew better.  He must have read the rules he signed up to. Deserves what he got. He actually got off light.

You haven’t answered my question. In what way has sending this man automatically to prison for 4 weeks (and destroying his ability to earn a good income and his career prospects for the rest of his life) specifically been effective in abating the spread of COvID-19 in the IOM in contrast to issuing him with a warning, a chunky fine, or some other sort of civil penalty?
