There've been great players who could do anything with a ball, but Maradona (And Pele before him) was the ball. His genius on the pitch will far outlive all the other stuff.

Nah. He was good, but never great. Cheating the way he did and saying god helped him was a very stupid move and he lost lots of respect. He cheated period. There is no god , period. He was never the best, period.

That is the very blinkered view from England.  The guy had an extraordinary amount of talent.

Where he lost some respect from me was his apparent drug problem but he is far from alone in the world of ex-professional footballers in that regard.

Great player.  I remember watching the 'hand of god' match when he somehow managed to get it over the top of Shilton (How??? Even with his hands up, Shilton should have been there first, I mean the guy was only about 4'8").  My dad was livid, but even he, when Maradona scored his second dribbling round most of the England team, said "I suppose I'll give him that one".

I know he was only 60, but with all the drug stories I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.

That's shows a lack of understanding about football.

Pretty much every player is cheating in football.  You only have to look at how they appeal for a throw in when it blatantly isn't their throw in to know that.

Maradona was systematically targeted by the opposition.  To think what he would have done with the protection players get today.

Sure, he handled the ball against England.  But his second goal sums up why he is one of THE greatest players ever.   England were not above cheating.  They took in turns to foul Maradona that day.
