Villa Marina Arcade

I see the DESC are looking for help with revitalising the Villa Arcade. It sounds like a bugger's muddle once again, as when it was renovated in 2009, it seemed to lose the retail space ambience. A shame the Art Deco interior disappeared, but that's the Isle of man for you!

So the following day they seem to have had the idea that it would be a great place for local creative businesses?

Whatever, it does need to be a destination rather than a hotch potch of small businesses selling stuff cheaply. Higher end shops don't need massive footfall, just regular purchasers of specialist items at higher cost. I think some of the creative industries would struggle to pay their way.

Anyway, you have a couple of weeks to think about it.

Such a damn shame all that deco stuff was removed. Those toilets were works of art. The whole lot was skipped. The know this because someone who worked there tipped me the wink and I got all the huge deco lights for my (then) huge house before they all got dumped. Those in charge know the price of everything and the value of nothing. It was a disgrace getting rid of it all.

All part of the master plan.... get off at the mega cruise ship terminal, stroll along Lord St, Duke Street, Strand Street and eventually end up at Villa Arcade before boarding a horse tram to electric railway, up Snaefell summit via Laxey for a dining experience with a view, a few selfies before catching a coach from the bungalow back to the mega cruise terminal. Meanwhile, the other mega cruisers do the reverse loop.

All end up back on board in the evening with obligatory kippers, bonag, manx fudge, enamel manx cat pin and TT races T-shirt.

Why does IOMG insist on charging VAT on the rent? I thought landlords have the option of not charging VAT on commercial premises?

Given the small size of some of the units it's likely that only small businesses will end up being tenants. If the tenant is not registered for VAT and cannot reclaim it back then one way or another that additional tax will have to be added on to sales price of their services or products.

And it's interesting that they are looking for companies rather than say individuals or charities.

The master MASTER plan is for the Island to be the motorway services of the Irish sea.

Toilet tax - this time next year rodders!

We could charge the motorway services bogs a penny a pee. Like Shetland receives a penny for every barrel of oil that lands from the North Sea (they make £millions a year from that)
