AlanShimmin
With lots of empty shops the opportunity should be taken to demo the smaller units and build back bigger

trmpton
To summarise. There are not that many empty shops. The guy that runs the art store must be ready for retirement. There are less pubs than there used to be. There are far fewer late night takeaways than there used to be. Tesco should be bulldozed. Have never set foot in the place, plenty of local places more worthy of my hard earned. Part of the rates should be used to make sure the outside of every property in town gets a bit of maintenance/lick of paint every 3 years. The place is a tip. Get the community service guys and gals to help out. There should be a fund set aside to keep empty properties looking presentable, even if just graphics in the windows. The Old Liptons should never have been a vaccine hub, it should be an indoor market with areas for regular and pop up traders. Christ knows what the Douglas Town development people have been doing for years. Flannels is ace and much needed. Bring back Anne Summers. Open the borders
pongo
More out of town retail would make good sense. And people would use it. Including a proper big supermarket up near the business park somewhere. With good access and parking. Much more sensible than having to drive into Douglas and find parking. 1

There are no access or parking problems at either supermarket in Douglas. Plenty of spaces to park if you want to access the street too. And it would open the way up for other out of town stuff. It's dumb people having to drive into Douglas for stuff which isn't better ordered online. The little shops in Douglas make sense for people who still work there and want to pick something up in their lunch break. Or a sandwich.

pongo
You guys seemingly have a very Douglas centric view. But Douglas isn't an obvious destination for me. No more than say Peel. Out of town makes much better sense. Especially for stuff which people cannot order online. 4 minutes ago, Banker said: Tesco is big enough, smaller independent shops is Whats needed not more multiples Small independent shops are a lovely idea and there are some great examples. The ones which work don't need to compete with supermarkets and are probably also online anyhow. It doesn't need to be an either / or. What's good for the economy is good for everyone. People aren't going to traipse around multiple little shops getting their groceries like in the past.
