A very good question.

I've had occasion to go through Dublin on many occasions in the past 20 years and you are correct; no passport was required.

It must be 10 years ago that someone, somewhere changed the regs. I flew into Dublin from the Island sans passport and behold - a passport (in the COMMON Travel Area that was no longer 'Common' apart for the Oirish) was now needed.  I queried this with 'an official' who was unable to state either when or why this requirement was introduced.

It’s not a passport. It’s a photo ID. I’ve travelled into Dublin Airport several times over the last 15 years, and once since flights were reintroduced post covid, on my driving licence.

live also entered by land and sailed into Dublin. No checks at all.

Coming back there have been no ID checks. No customs checks either.

Common travel area doesn’t mean documents not required.

Then your experience was different to mine.  Fortunately, at the time, I had photo ID but was told, quite clearly that a passport would be required in future.

Observer: check your history timeline.

My experience also which makes the requirement at Dublin airport something of an inexplicable anomaly.

Overheard Loganair crew on my flight this morning, sounds like there's an upcoming exodus of crews on the Island. All headed to Belfast to work for Emerald offering better pay and conditions. Pilots and cabin crew.

Has anyone else noticed the - what appears to be - facial recognition camera at the end of the arrivals walkway before baggage collection?

Seems to be a new recent addition...

What is it about the camera that makes you think it's for facial recognition?

I’m guessing he knows it’s for facial recognition 😉

I don't actually! Just a hunch. It's definitely not a normal CCTV camera. Looks like an opticians eye test machine mounted on the wall at the end of the arrivals walkway before you turn the corner to baggage.

It's there to make sure that Reynolds and/or Spake don't sneak back into the Island! 😉

Flew through Gatwick over the weekend.

Check-in was fine.

Huge queues at security though and my heart sank when I saw them, but they moved amazingly quickly.
