Many years ago there was an outbreak here on the Island and those people, including my late mother were confined/isolated at the White Hoe hospital.

They seemed to rid the Island of it without lockdowns?

Yes my mum was in isolation there as a child with Diptheria.

I think it was later used as a recovery unit for elderly patients before becoming the secure unit?

The inoculation programme after the war was quite substantial, and although effective, was costly. Diptheria was more-or-less eradicated on the Island end of 1940s and the vaccination programme continued for another decade.

On the Island, improved sanitation etc played a big part.

(I have source info but ICBA finding it just now)

Secure Unit ?

The old White Hoe isolation hospital was converted to a “care home” for those with Alzheimer’s/dementia. Then it was demolished. An adolescent secure unit was established there. I’m not up to date about how that ties in with Cronk Sollysh ( operated by St Christopher’s ) or the facilities at Tromode House.
