Douglas East

Have any of the candidates actually got a proper job?

I'd be loathed to vote for anyone who sees this as a step up. Worse than Onchan. Although not as bad as Middle where in some cases its almost certainly their last chance for a pension.

We would get better candidates IMO if the salary was abolished.

Josem states he has two jobs, very important fellow, coop job and tax alliance. I think that equates to needs a job to go with his Aussie but German, no wait Manx by choice..  ooh f**k I give up, I am just hoping he doesn’t stand where we live once he fails in Douglas again.

We may be safe though as he is only on his second area in Douglas so we should be safe for a decade.

And then there is the Self Proclaimed KING.  Where will he go next.

Not being a Douglas butty just being nosey but would this be the safest seat if David Christian decides to stand though he always did poll well in council elections anyway.

Christian represented Hills Ward, which was identical to the current Douglas South.  So if he has a personal vote it would be there.  But the thing about Douglas East is that it always attracts a large number of candidates, usually on quite a low of votes cast.  So it's possible to get in on a few hundred votes as Joughin did in the by-election.

It's possible he might stand on an informal ticket with his old mate Ashford in Douglas North.  Putting up candidates like that means that it's a lot easier to get elected if you can get supports to vote for both it means they can't then also vote for any of your rivals.

His official address is on Bray Hill which is North. Even though he still probably owns his property in Union Mills.

As it happens Bray Hill is all in Douglas Central (Polling District CDGC4)

But it's certainly nearer than he was.

Full disclosure: I know Pete and have worked with him in the past at the same company here.

With that said, having listened to his interview now I actually think he's a pretty credible candidate: https://www.manxradio.com/podcasts/general-election-2021/episode/peter-gilmour-full-candidate-interview-1/

I might have to rethink my choices come election day, knowing that he's probably better at handling and understanding numbers than any of the other candidates, and much will come down to being able to do that in the next few years. East is crowded now. Easier to say who I definitely won't vote for than who I will...

Two manifestoes quietly dropped through the letterbox, bell not rung, went straight in the bin. Good job Barber and Joughin!

I know both candidates and spoke to them. Joney is definitely canvassing herself and Clare did a first card drop before canvassing I think. I wouldn’t exclude two good candidates because of that and you can always message them to have a chat.

Josem is continuing to not win people over, he seems to be coming across as genuine as some Ratners jewellery. There’s a post on the IOM News & Politics Facebook site featuring a screenshot of Mr Josem’s page, depicting him volunteering to clean war graves. The poster has indicated she would rather see his policies rather than a sponsored post of his volunteer work, which smacks of bad taste. I’m inclined to agree, insincerity oozes from the man’s every pore.
