I thought Crookall didn’t seek re-election Legco to stand for MHK.

Of course he may have seen the way the wind was blowing in Legco and thought Boot vulnerable.

I suspect it was the way that the LegCo election was going - I think he realised there wasn't the CoMin support.  To be fair he only got elected to LegCo because the Keys couldn't agree on a candidate and he was put forward as a compromise.  Boot was always vulnerable and wouldn't have been elected in any circumstance than the candidate list in 2016, but I was surprised Crookall dithered so much before (re-)announcing.

In so far as Cowin has a use (and it's less than he thinks it is) it's outside the tent pissing in.  You can see him as another Houghton if he got elected.

According to Tim, he ran because he was fed up with the administration of the past five years, with the growth of government despite the promises to reduce numbers, the inaction on sewage, the flagrant screw-ups of the DoI and other departmental failings. I honestly think he'll surprise us all this time around.

Well, his eyesight is still functioning then. Did he announce any plans as to precisely how he would intend to deal with any of the above?

It will be hilarious if he ends up as a DOI member, they'll chew him up and spit him out before breakfast like they have with everybody else. He will be able to change nothing, what did he achieve in his previous 5 year term as an MHK?

To be fair, did any candidate in any constituency announce any plans as to precisely how they would deal with any of the issues?

As for being "hilarious" if he gets DoI and they "chew him up and spit him out" well, maybe, if you think having incompetent, wanna-be oligarch, untouchable managers in the DoI who actively work against the island's best interests is hilarious.

I dont think it will be funny if the DoI continue to run rings around any of our elected officials. It will be as far from funny as you can get.

It's going to take more than one person to fix the problem that is the DoI. We need our MHKs to work together as a united front to change the problems in the CS. I'm hoping Tim will be one of the leaders in this effort.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think Tim can do no wrong. I know his track record could have been better. But people can and do change for the better. I've done it myself and I've watched others do it. I'd rather encourage people to learn and grow and do better, instead of continually tearing them down for past mistakes.

I'm rooting for him. I want him to succeed in his aims, not for his own glory, but for the betterment of the island as a whole.

Nobody is going to do anything about it. They’ve seen off Baker. Now some other sap will be put in place to front their general shit-ness. They churn and burn muppets for fun.

If all the MHKs have this same defeatist attitude, nothing will be done. I'm hoping there are at least a few who are willing to stand together to change the situation.

We clearly can't continue to allow the DoI to have free reign. There's too much at stake now. If things don't change soon, we may as well just hand the keys over and be done with it. I'm pinning my hopes on change.

It's tough being an optimist these days, but I refuse to surrender. My mental health depends upon it.

How is saying "nothing is ever going to make any difference" and "will never ever happen" anything but defeatist? It's the very definition of defeatist.

demonstrating expectation or acceptance of failure.

Rather than sending out the message to our MHKs that we expect nothing will change, we should be demanding and expecting them to get it sorted. You're effectively giving them license to roll over.

We, the electorate, need to take more responsibility for holding our elected officials to account. If the press/media wont do it, we need to get off our arses and start using every means at our disposal to ensure things change.

The last Beaman's Report was scathing about the DOI, including the bit about having unqualified engineers, having a CEO position that was incapable of overseeing it all and being utterly un-delivery orientated. Yet Quayle said the Dept wouldn't be broken up. Unless we get some new thinking in the new elected roles, things are going to carry on in the same vein.

Tim Crookall is not going to make any difference, certainly not by himself, that Dept has digested Gawne, Harmer and Baker to date and will do the same again.

The People's Prince has remained strangely quiet on the subject of the Promenade, despite being on its committee. Keeping schtum and not having the public (except on these boards) connect him with the fiasco has probably saved his political arse for this election. Unless I'm wrong, Claire Christian is also a DOI member? Haven't heard much from her on the subject either?

These people's political survival was being put before dealing with the elephant and Crookall will be little different IMHO.

Ms LB is quite enterprise/business minded

I wouldn't wish to see Manx Care moved further towards an insurance based private model - there's no public mandate for this

Are there to be department members other than Minister? It would be a big leap forward for anyone other than the experienced Mr Crookall

Maybe one of the more independent enterprise agencies - tourism and MNH perhaps? I believe she has an interest in that area

Oddly enough Quayle was right about not breaking up DoI.  If it is 'too big' to be manageable, it's because it has become too bloated and has taken on too many projects of dubious usefulness (at best).  It's core responsibilities are no different to other Departments, it's just that its management has been allowed to do whatever came into its head for the last decade plus.  Its response to the Beamans Report very underplayed criticisms about it taking on too many projects was ... to announce more projects.  Far too often 'reorganisation' has been the way in which malfunctioning Departments have been allowed to continue unchanged (but with payrises all round).

But the responsibility doesn't stop at the DoI.  The Treasury, the Cabinet Office and the AG Office all have responsibilities here as do the various planning functions.  Unless all these are tackled as well, the DoI won't be reformed.
