Alan Shea is guest of honour today and his uniform is on display.

This man was castigated, ridiculed, threatened, repressed for years and years just because he was homosexual.

The whole history of his struggle in there for all to see just by doing a google search.

Here he is presenting his petition of doleance to a gentleman who is rather more anonymous these days.  Hardly a word to be found about him anywhere. Nothing about his position here, his history.  It's as if he never existed. I'm not going to mention his name but truly, if anyone of us thinks that shady business doesn't go on there then we are sadly mistaken.

Who is it?  Hardly controversial to name him.

If he's nowhere to be found on the Internet then I'm not sure if it's prudent to mention him here either. My point is that depending on who you are and what power you wield, your life is made far more comfortable than if your only 'sin' happens to be that you are gay,

I've just be informed that he is indeed still part of the internet.  His name was Thomas St. John Neville Bates. He died in October 2020.

Former Tynwald clerk handed suspended sentence for gross indecency

He also faced other charges.

The dichotomy of the gay man presenting his Petition of Doleance to the Clerk of Tynwald who went on to become a convicted sex offender and have his name added to the sex register.

It's a funny old world.

It always delights me to see the governor of a British Isle drive a Bavarian car :) I assume this was the royal guest making her way back from St Johns, unless the governor now gets an Aston Martin escort car that’s being driven by a trained driver who knows how to block traffic at junctions.
