Because we can't trust them. CM candidates don't declare ahead of the election. MHK candidates don't declare who they'll support.

Because the program for government is decided by the CM after the election.

Because it's a fundimental principle of democracy that voters can vote for or against a government. And we can't.

This is the best post I’ve ever read on here because it is completely correct. The whole system needs overhaul and as Declan says no 1 is a CM candidate with a clear manifesto for us ( like the electorate , stupid as we are ) and WE chose want we want from our government. Surely the idiots in charge can see that , well they can but don’t trust us.

One solution to that could be to make the CM ballot transparent.

You could then tell the candidate your wishes on how you want them to vote re the CM and they'll never get your vote again if they don't.

Think of the fun you could have...

The process is changing this year with a weeks delay to allow for CM candidates to declare & perhaps set out priorities. At that time you could contact your MHK to express preference, whether they take any notice is another thing!

It is transparent already.  Here's last time's vote:

Of course the problem is that there's no guarantee that the candidate you want for CM will be elected by their constituency or nominated if they are.

Are all of the ballots reported back in real time?

If you'd followed the link you would have seen that the votes were then read out in alphabetical order by the Clerk.  It would have been broadcast live and then appeared on listen again shortly after.  The Hansard would have appeared fairly quickly as well, as it was a short session and there would have been no backlog.

Voting for oneself doesn't really sit right with me. What happened to the house being honourable? Even messi and ronaldo usually voted for the other, never themselves. Most unseemly in my view.

A good point to a degree, but if you don't think you are the best for the job, what would you do?  The candidates should abstain, IMHO,  as they have an interest in the matter.

That would be the honourable thing to do. However…
