There's more than one officer on board a ship. Unless everyone else were in their bunks and he fell asleep at the wheel. Vessel that big would have audible radar/depth alarms and 24 hour watch, surely? It takes a large vessel a few miles to adjust to a course direction, in this case possibly a change in direction not actioned soon enough by an inexperienced officer on watch.

This is not a very large vessel at all!! It's a tiny coaster!! probably 3/4 crew max
