Interesting take on the crisis from The Moscow Times. How the reaction by Western nations is playing right into Putin's hands...

I think they probably mean WW2 rather than WW1...

I heard a hair raising interview this morning on BBC radio 4 today with a woman from Russia talking about the ‘truth’ of what was going on. How it’s the Ukraines who are bombing themselves and how the president was a nazi. Even the presenter was almost speechless. The thing was, she was not angry, in fact she seemed incredulous that anyone would suggest otherwise.

I felt like one of those people who turned on the wireless and heard War of the Worlds for the first time.

Russia’s foreign ministry has confirmed the use of the TOS-1A weapon system in Ukraine - these are thermobaric weapons. Thermobaric weapons are diabolical.

There is a serious concern that Russia could deploy chemical weapons in Kyiv. Putin is a war criminal. When this war is finally over, he and his henchmen must face the ICJ. The West cannot allow him and his executioners to crawl back into our societies as if nothing has ever happened. Western democracies must wean ourselves off dirty Russian roubles permanently!

We can't let Putin bully the west. We need to keep the pressure up, crowd him, and limit his options. I see Poland are going to supply Ukraine with fighter jets. Good. Putin needs his ass kicked.

Putin isn't bullying the West, he is bullying Ukraine.

Isn't the only sensible way out of this to put less pressure on and give Russia an escape route out this so it's saves face?

The further this goes the higher the stakes.  The sooner the West can offer Putin something so that Russia can come out of this saving face then the better.

Have to say watching Liz Truss on the media tonight she did a good job given what she had to deal with.

You mean that she managed not to fall over and strung together a garbled contradictory message and glossed over her faux pas encouraging Brits to go to Ukraine to fight, which was directly against FCDO advice?

I really like this thread. Everyone is free to express their opinions without fear or favour. If only they could do that in Russia e.g. calling this barbaric invasion a war without the risk of being imprisoned for 15 years. I suppose Russians are used to this - they have come to accept that Russian opposition leaders are customarily either get bumped off or get incarcerated.

Now consider that Russia appears to have targeted nuclear power stations and I think the real threat is a nuclear "accident" which would turn people against the building of new nuclear power stations and force the west to rely on natural gas once again and specifically that supplied from Russia and the areas that Russia will exploit in Ukraine (assuming it goes to plan).

I really hope I wasn't right about the Nuclear "Accident".

Goodness I am so saddened but also angry at the mass destruction Putin has brought to Ukraine.

Murderous deliberate destruction so he can insist an entire society bends to his will. Forget popular hopes of being a normal European society, Ukraine has to be an agrian vassal state to Putin's empire.

No doubt Ukraine had societal problems and these problems had led to conflict in a small proportion of its society with 10s of thousands affected. But to think bringing war to millions was a reasonable response to this is contemptible.

And now this is justified with the standard authoritarian doublethink: if these people just did what I want them to do there would be no need for this.

How to stop him?

Putin for a long time has been losing options and now basically his toolkit only consists of hammers. And when all you have is hammers it is a terrible truth that all problems look like nails.

Happy the day when he is gone and has no power over others. Just look at the evil he has done and despair. He will nail himself in to his throne.
