Apple
""New chancellor Nadhim Zahawi has launched his Tory leadership bid with the promise of tax cuts. Speaking at an event in Westminster, organised by Conservative Way Forward (CWF), he said he would slash income tax from 20p to 19p next year, and to 18p in 2024 - if he became Prime Minister. He added: “Let me be clear: tax as a percentage of GDP will fall year on year if I become prime minister. That is a promise.” In an earlier interview with Sky News to launch his campaign, Mr Zahawi said he would finance tax cuts by getting every government department to slash their costs by 20%. His proposed public sector cuts could affect the health service and schools."" Well he's doing his bit now so thats ok.
Nom de plume
How odd this story hasn't been ran by the BBC or Sky News, how odd indeed.
quilp
It was mentioned on Sky and I'm sure I remember it being on the rolling BBC news last week but I've searched through all the BBC sections and there's nowt. Curious. https://news.sky.com/story/nadhim-zahawi-questions-remain-over-former-chancellors-seven-figure-settlement-with-hmrc-12788572

Nom de plume
The mere fact he's having to repay circa £3-4miliion in unpaid taxes suggests there were wrong doings before HMRC's discovery. This is the chair of the Conservative party. One of many top Tory brass lecturing the great British unwashed that they can't afford to pay our front line services a fair wage yet evade tax through offshore family trusts in an effort to negate paying their fair share. The apathy toward this story tells you everything. 2

Apple
Slight tangent on this is the call from the Millionaires at Davos to raise taxes for Billionaires as we are apparently heading for a polycrisis that means the very rich are getting richer at the expense of the poor. Who knew..?
Ringy Rose
I don't know why the Conservative founder of YouGov, whose tax issues allegedly relate to the sale of YouGov, is getting a free pass from the BBC. It's a complete mystery.

Apple
Labour have written to HMRC to explain if and when any fines have been incurred. Apparently there is a rule that says care must be taken to give them accurate information.

Apple
...and he was the Chancellor when apparently he was trying to sort it all out with the HMRC, of which he is in charge of, isn't he? It's just like a rerun of the past with this new Sunak UK Government. Who's next in the frame? Grant Schnapps ?
