It's just like a rerun of the past with this new Sunak UK Government. Who's next in the frame? Grant Schnapps ? He was chancellor for about 2 weeks before Liz Truss threw him under the bus (shortly before doing the decent thing herself). Under Sunak he’s in what seems like a party position rather than a government job. The whole thing is quite unbelievable though. He owed £5million in tax?! Far more than just about everybody will earn in a lifetime. How did the country end up with these totally out of touch twats in charge?

It's been going on since forever. Cameron had a Cabinet stuffed full of millionaires, IDS and Howard & Co before that, Major, back to Thatcher and her acolytes. Wealth forms the the "Natural Party of Government". No wonder they didn't want the EU Tax Directive.
P.K.
Zahawi is worth about £100m but he still expected his stables to be heated by the public purse! That tells you all you need to know about him...

That was Kwarteng. Easy mistake to make when there have been so many of them. They are a comedy of incompetence. It feels a lot like 1997 during the fag end of the Thatcher/Major years. Entitlement, every man for himself, factional infighting. A disgrace really.

Was he chancellor briefly after Sunak resigned to pile the pressure on Boris, or have I got this completely wrong?
TheTeapot
Bit of a surprise this story really, I mean, he doesn't look like a stereotypical villain at all. 1

Always found him creepy...never answers a question (I mean, even far less so than most politicians try not to).

No, that's right it was during that period as well that the "offences" were committed. It's laughable, a bank junior isn't allowed to be overdrawn on the grounds of financial responsibility but the Chancellor of the time can make "mistakes" running into millions in penalties and money owing to HMRC and his party will still cut him slack.

There shouldn't need to be an enquiry. Even the whiff of tax dodging while Chancellor of the Exchequer should be enough. We're getting beyond shockable nowadays.
