Better off in UK

Yes, nice. If a bit coolly windswept at times. We did look at Skye but it's been ruined in summer by that bloody bridge and morons from England with satnavs.

I think you’ll find that in summer the midgies are a bigger problem than English ( or Manx ) tourists. The bridge is another matter. Marmite really.

I know three families who left to the UK "for good" last year.  Two are back already and the third one is planning to come back.

Traffic was one issue especially after living in the IOM for decades . The nearly hour long commutes vs the 10 to 15 minute commute for most of us here was an issue

Add on the relative isolation / kids struggling etc and they decided to come back.

All of them had sold their houses  here just before the house price boom..They are all struggling  to get back on the property ladder here and renting right now.

For me it feels increasingly like an open prison. It's a pleasant one with nice grounds, and the wardens let you roam about, but you're locked in with the same coarse inmates every day, and there's little to do that doesn't involve walking the same grounds over and over. I understand for some it's enough, but the stagnation of the economy and the loss of the young means it feels increasingly stale and confined for me, and the increasingly chaotic thrashing-about of councils and government makes it feel like there's nobody at the wheel with any sense. It's not like you can disappear off into a little place in the country either, since they've all escalated into the millions over the past year. More than ever before I'm thinking about leaving, but as others have pointed out, finding a marginally less-crap equivalent is the challenge.

Wales is very nice, Anglesey would be my choice but there's quite an anti-English sentiment in places.

Wick , you’d really go live in Wick😂

There are several Manx who have moved there in the last couple decades. Something about the women of Wick seems to be the draw.

Yes, the midges are a nuisance, I'll grant you. Mind you, they have their moments here too if you're outside enjoying a drink of a summer evening.

I’d abolish the tax cap if I were made king of the Island, but I do agree with no IHT and CGT.

The tax cap is a tough one. It's unfair that this can reduce the percentage tax rate for someone right down. But £200k income tax is more in a single year than most people will pay in their entire career.

I also agree with no IHT. No CGT I'm not so sure about, the lack of CGT encourages the buy-to-let property speculation that's causing so many issues.

Before "crap towns" became vogue Holyhead was considered the scruffiest place in the UK.

It's dark history, being the centre of Druidism, doesn't exactly add to the "appeal" of Ynys Mons...

I like Anglesey very much too. There is much deprivation there though, and another blow this week with the proposed closure of the chicken factory.

Is that the same as the chicken ranch?

Yeah but if you're Manx, you're a Celtic brother.  Got me out of trouble a few times when I was living with 3 Welsh lads at Uni and we went back to their homes for weekends etc.  I didn't mention my parents are both English 😁
