Yet another pointless Tynwald Committee

I see yet another select committee has been set up, this one proposed by Jason Moorehouse MHK to ‘improve visitor offering’. It is to report back in February. It will be interesting what will be proposed ………………. Theme Park in Castletown? New Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre for Castletown? Bigger, Better, Bolder and Stronger Housing and Interpretation Centre for the Peggy? Felt Museum?

It’s amazing really, we have a government quango with highly paid civil servants, and a government constantly dick waving about their success, but not their failures. We require a ‘grand’ committee to ruminate, cogitate and regurgitate something which will never get acted upon.

To really grow tourism it would take some structural changes - moving away from focusing on TT (distorts accomodation etc market), trying to address travel costs (and no doubt cheaper fares for visitors would be controversial) etc.

Easier to just try and bump up numbers through more cruise arrivals.

When will they be “improving the resident offering”?

Same shit comes up with every new shower of elected members.

Gives them something to do to make it look like they have work to do.

It’s another opportunity to create an official wish list of ‘ideas’ and a chance for the usual suspects to push for ‘attractions’ within their constituency. No doubt they will demand that ferry prices are reduced etc.

All Jason Moorhouse wanted was for the Sea Terminal and Ronaldsway Airport to be tidied up so visitors get a good impression of the island.

Anybody walking about would see what needs doing.

We already have a vision and a strategy. https://www.gov.im/media/1377909/isle-of-man-visitor-economy-strategy-2022-2032.pdf

What we need is action. Or at least somebody with a sweeping brush and a pot of paint.

Took them 2 years to sort out the trolleys at the airport. Give them a break. Rome wasn’t built in day etc……

You’re right of course but recent years they don’t do maintenance sadly. Then we get the likes of Laxey flooding.

Yes but you forget many people in the public sector gave up during covid when they realised you could still get paid for doing next to nothing. We can’t ask any of them to give a shit again. The airport and the sea terminal are throughly depressing. It would take a small bit of effort to get them right but even a small bit of effort seems too much to ask or expect anymore when nobody cares and inflation busting pay rises are handed out regardless.

Maybe they should try this.

It won’t be someone with a sweeping brush and a pot of paint, but one of IOMGs preferred contractors to do the job.

You are right that the airport and sea terminal are shabby, worn out and certainly aren’t a good first impression.

Creating a select committee isn’t going to solve any problems either.

But this not what the various directors need for their padded CV's, they need new, shiny and development. A bit of TLC is not part of their mindset !

And even when Cobb arrived and wanted to sort out the trolleys, the Treasury wouldn't give him the money and he had to scam it out of the DfE budget.  It's not just the Departments that are addicted to only spending money on grand projects, the whole system is set up so small projects that will improve matters or even basic maintenance are discouraged.  Until the Treasury mindset is sorted out, any sort of improvement is unlikely.

It's pretty depressing that any manager in any sort of organisation has ever needed to have this pointed out to them.

He was correct however regarding the sea terminal and visitors first impressions, 59 cruise ships booked in for next year and then the regular passengers on the Packet .    First impressions are important and do set the tone of  the Island, until you wander through Duke Street that is.

I thought the Duke Street Flats, building works were due to be recommenced - imminently, according to a couple of posters on here?
