Probably one of the most magnificent buildings on that street is the Isle of Man bank. Great exterior and the interior is equally impressive. Although about 8 years ago there was an application to knock it down.

Doubtless the Court House will be knocked down.

The builder's architects will design a new building that will be very modular and tacky. £££profit to sq.metre ratio to be high as can be.

They will put a couple of token features such as silly mouldings to 'reflect' the previous building. The planners go for this every time.

Just look at some of the new flats on the Promenade. I would rather something with pure modern originality than a revolting poor quality pastiche of what was there before.

Hi Nipper

I agree totally with what you have said, unfortunately old Douglas is disappearing very fast and is being replaced with all this new architechture!! You only have to have a look at Circular Rd in Douglas, Hope Street, Westmoreland Rd and many more examples to see so called modern architecture!

Surely it is down to our MHK's from whatever area of the Isle of Man to ensure that our heritage and architecture is preserved?!?!

When it is gone it is gone forever, just take a look around lower Douglas to prove this...

Surely there was never an application to knock down the IOM Bank? Its got to be more important than just a Manx treasure, its truly magnificent!

Yes I have both editions of Curiosities, The Court House is infested with pigeons and is said to be health risk, but really has been allowed to decay. Whether this is intentional to justify knocking it down or not who knows, but is it correct that the likes of HH are allowed to neglect the architectural heritage of the Island?

Slim, thats where I was headed....

Its a money thing though, I don't actually have enough, not even nearly enough. I was just thinking if there were enough people and the government came on our side and slapped a compulsory purchase order on it and well...it was just a thought. I might have to speak to Domonic..
