So why is it when you clear your throat someone else has to do the same?

 

Same applies with yawning.

Maybe it's "mirroring" - an apparently friendly body language action.

But throat clearing isn't really body language

When you see someone else yawn your body recognises it and thinks that there isn't enough oxygen in the air so you do the same...something like that anyway. Google it, there is a proper scientific explanation i'm sure.
