hostmaster Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 After being away for a few years I was so disappointed on my return in the journey from Ronaldsway to Castletown. On the road from the airport in both directions, it’s disgraceful, the hedges have not been cut and the bushes on the roundabout are so over grown, it’s appalling and its been like this for some time now. I was working in Africa earlier this year and one of the things I noticed is that the city might be disgusting but the roads to any of the airports are well maintained and made to look nice with plants and flowers. What do we offer the eye of the visitor to the IOM? I road lined with overgrown hedges, partly painted factories and roundabouts that look like overgrown waste land. I know I have been away for some time but have they passed a law to discourage visitors here? I had friends visiting and they thought that we were on a back road from the airport. Am I the only one who cares about how we portray ourselves to the outside world? It’s about time that the Island was tidied up.
ans Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 That road is not part of the TT course. Traditionally our Government and the DOT choose to spend our road tax and general tax on just maintaining that strip of road for the non tax paying racing fraternity who visit us for a few weeks a year.
hostmaster Posted August 22, 2004 Author Posted August 22, 2004 I know all that but the airport and the roads to it were alway kept looking well.
Declan Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Don't you find it particularly irritating when exiles just off the plane look for the first thing to criticise the Island about. This is too bad an example I suppose, and these comments aren't addressed at the original poster - but most summers see someone who hasn't been back to the Island for 15 years writing to complain that the Island isn't like it was when they were a kid, especially complaining about the number offices. Conveniently forgetting that the reason they left the Island in the Eighties was lack of employment. They didn't want to live in a decaying museum piece (as the Island appeared in the Eighties) but neither did the people who stayed - hence the changes. But these people, seem to believe that we should live in a Ye Olde Mannin so that they can bask in nostalgia every few years. (Anyway, hostmaster sorry that your journey which must have been all of a mile was disappointing - give us a shout next time you are over and we'll try to move the factories for you).
Addie Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Don't you find it particularly irritating when exiles just off the plane look for the first thing to criticise the Island about. Also irritating when exiles turn up, mid-morning, to the listed car hire desks at the sea terminal to find them closed - as we did 2 weeks ago. Telephone them and you're told 'Our airport desk is open so get a taxi to bring you to Castletown, or we charge 25 pounds to bring a car to Douglas'! Real world player stuff that! Not! PS. Thank heavens for Hippy Corkill's 4WD & Van Centre near B&Q!

Maybe you think we should take pride in the weed beds we are cultivating at the airport and the lethargic attitude to hedge maintenance, I however feel ashamed.
Mission Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 If all you've got to tax your brain is a few overgrown hedges, I suggest you're pretty well sorted in life. So, why not sit back, relax, sip on a beer or two and enjoy the bike racing over the next couple of weeks. Either that or get yourself down to HSS and pick up a strimmer and hedge cutters and do some highway maintenance.

hostmaster Posted August 22, 2004 Author Posted August 22, 2004 Ballasalla is not that bad, not now anyway.
Snaipyr Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 I Like hedges overgrown - can't stand them strimmed to death. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds.

If you're worried about any hedges not being cut it's down to the conservationists. They seem to rule what gets cut and what doesn't get cut, when it's allowed to be cut and when it isn't allowed to be cut. We have many rare wild flowers that grow on our hedges and verges so they reckon. I suggest you contact your local manx conservation society on this matter.

At least the hedges contain wildlife that we all wish to preserve. Unlike the wildlife that terrorises Douglas promenade every weekend when the so called big men tanked up on drugs and booze frighten the life out of the innocents While running up debts on their Corporation House rents. Ha
