Last Ten Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 We keep getting international telephone calls, that on answering play a recorded message stating you have won a prize, etc, etc and you cannot terminate the message even after putting the phone down I would like to know if I can get these calls stopped and also am I being charged for receiving these nuisance calls. Anyone else suffering in the IOM? Cheers Last Ten.
Observer Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 You won't be charged for receiving them - if you listen to the whole message it probably gives out a premium rate number for you to call to claim your 'prize' (which obviously you are not going to do) Report it to Manx Telecom.
Uni Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I had same pre-recorded messages, I just hangup straight away. It won't cut them off if you have a phone system that allows you to transfer calls from one to phone to another. Costs you nothing unless you ring them back.
R_ReaVeR Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 You could try these people. I registered with them for my home phone number after receiving numerous "you've won a prize" phone calls and it seems to have done the trick Unsolicited phone block
Mission Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 Yeah, I had that one yesterday, there was a message on my answerphone when I got home from work. Thanks for the link R_Reaver, I just registered with them.
Last Ten Posted August 28, 2004 Author Posted August 28, 2004 Thanks everybody for replying and thanks R_ReaVeR for the link, I have just registered as well. Last Ten
Mission Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 and you cannot terminate the message even after putting the phone down Just had it again, so I hung up after he said "so please don't hang up". Pressed for a dial tone again and it was still playing, unplugged from the socket, plugged in again and still playing! Annoying feckers, I really hate things like this.
The Old Git Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 I registed with TPS a while back and it cut out mosty of these calls except the one we all seem to have received yesterday. I presume they operate from outside the UK and don't comply with the TPS service

(In much the same way as when somebody rings you and does not put the phone back on the cradle after the call and you subsequently can't make a call until they have terminated the connection)
Lucy Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 I'm still getting them today. They don't bother me as such, I just don't like my phone ringing at all so when it's not even someone that wants to speak to me it's a bit frustrating. Still, it means that while they're clogging the line up real people can't get through to annoy me.
thebees Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Ha ha ha ha ha foolish machines left 3 foolish messages on our answer machine. They are a pain in the arse, ?who knows where they get the numbrs from...MT of course, how kind of them. They're so persistent as well, Mr Bee keeps them on talking for ages and gets them to send information. Often we get junk mail with reply paid envelopes in, where better to send junk mail to? we either rip their junk up and send it right back, or send them some other hardsell loan application in their reply paid envelope. Does anyone ever read junk mail?
Tee Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I read all the junk mail, it's so nice to get mail that isn't bills
