Speckled Frost Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/t...dio/3610248.stm I hope what Mark Thompson said yesterday isn't all lip service. Often used as a throw-away remark 'I sometimes wonder why I pay my TV licence' has never been so apt. TV at the moment is a disgrace with cheap reality and lifestyle shows and endless repeats. I don't remember the last show I truly got excited about. Of course, you should have a life and not need to depend on TV but we all know that's tat.
monkey_magic Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 I think the BBC is the best of a bad bunch at the moment. And I object to subsidising BBC 3, 4, News 24, etc and all the digital radio stations which I am yet to see or hear. Can't even get radio 5 properly.
Declan Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 See no reason to disbelieve him. For example, Changing Rooms has been cancelled. BBC has been particularly poor lately, many, many nights seem to consist of 70's kids TV for Adults - Changing Rooms - Why Don't You? Animal Hosipital - Animal Magic The Regional News - A dumbed down John Craven's News Round Rolf's Art Masterclass - Take Hart (only without Morph) Ground Force - Percy Thrower in the Blue Peter Garden DIY SOS - Blue Peter minus the washing up bottle Shame there hasn't been any hard hitting drama like Grange Hill. However, will this committment to supplying value to the licence fee payer extend to giving the Isle of Man the basic local coverage that every other licence fee payer gets.
Declan Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Monkey you can get BBC Radio 6 Music (and I assume the other digital stations) through your computer. In particular I'd recommend 6 Music it has some great shows - Mark Riley's Rocket Science, and Craig Charles' Funk Show are well worth checking out.
Speckled Frost Posted August 31, 2004 Author Posted August 31, 2004 You're right about dumbing down Declan and MM, don't get me started on this farce that is BBC digital TV - cheeky tw@ts. I think the BBC is lost when parliament closes for the summer. You lose programmes such as Question Time and This Week. But for me the biggest disappointment is Channel Friends. I used to watch Ch4 all the time with it's cutting edge documentaries and top class comedy. Now we are left with the 100 greatest TV links, Holly friggin' Oaks and 'Oh, life is so hard living in the sun' programmes.
simon Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 BBC Four is my favorite TV channel. Nearly every night they show something interesting. Fantastic, obscure music, arts etc. One of the things that I particularly like is that they show programmes which don't easily fit a timeslot ... ie they show a programme which is as long as it is. Radio 4 remains excellent. And the BBC website is one of my daily visits. I hardly ever watch BBC1. I never did. I still often find BBC2 interesting. Haven't listened to Mark Riley on 6. It's on my todo list. Mark 'n Lard were great. I'm pleased with the BBC
