Da Pook normally alternates between either the Writer's Handbook or the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook as my annual writing guide, but a trip to Waterstones yesterday revealed that there is a new kid on the block.

The Writer's Market UK 2008: The Essential New Annual Resource for All Writers is published by D&C and seems to me to carry far more detail than the other two guides. The comprehensive introduction to writing, and numerous hit and tips at the beginning is very interesting, and useful especially if you are just starting out in writing. A lot of thought has gone into to this new book, so it can compete with the rival guides.

Writer's Markets only weakness (for me) is that it is quite hard to navigate. it's hard to find the tab where the book publishers finish and the magazine publishers start. Overall, I think it's a great book, especially for a first try.

If you buy an annual writers guide, the Writer's Market UK 2008 could be worth a look to the other normal two options. It's also slightly cheaper at £12.99 compared with £14.99 for the others, if you like to count the pennies.
