Dodgy Emails

is anyone else getting any dodgy emails, i've a yahoo account but none on that, my manxnet account though!

i got a mail off someone saying it was secretGurl@****.net, with a picture on and a line saying"i'm an attractive, affectionate person who can make anyone happy man", along with it came a file that was intercepted by norton and destroyed because of files that would harm my computer!

also, i've had loads of stuff stopped and deleted by the spammaster, and loads have got through with the message "my details", along with a .pif file, some have been images that it wants to have opened, these have been .ssr files i think, i could be wrong. anyway, my norton stops me opening these too.

is this a new phenomena?

is this happening to anyone else?

does anyone know anything about it?

as i said, my nortons got no flies on it, ad-aware is rude, and spybots got no ass to kick, so my computer is clean as a whistle!

and, no, the picture of secret girl? not fit!

I'm also Nortoned up to the eyeballs and keep it current online, and have run Spybot and AdAware (but don't subscribe - you have to draw the line somewhere, right), yet still get quite a lot of stuff coming through.

I must say that it's a real pain, and I'm only glad my kids have grown up and don't live with me...some of it is more than a little graphic. It's also pretty clever - I've noticed recently that names and headers seem to use real names from my recent favourites folder. Or maybe I'm getting paranoid...

no, ya not being paranoid, i've had some from what would appear to be my ex's account, the full email address aint there, just 2 letters missing off it though!

i am glad its not just me!

not had any rude ones though, are these .pif files stu?

i don't really understand why people make these viruses, it tells of sick little people who have nothing better to do than to try and make life a misery for others. i mean, i'm not a threat to anyone, i'm not a millionaire, nor am i an important member of society. i don't use my computer to look at my bank details or to do anything really important, its a hobby, something to do when i can't be arsed doing anything else, and theres nothing on the box. so why are people trying to invade or contaminate my computer!

i do, however, buy things over the internet, records, clothing and stuff off e-bay mainly, i don't use any sites that don't have secure checkouts, and use paypal where i can. am i under threat from doing this, even though its supposed to be secure?

any help or answers would be very much appreciated, i am glad i'm not the only one getting these, but some idea as to why, how, and what is happening would be double top!

If you want my advice, ditch the manxnet accounts, I was getting 20+ viruses twice/day, since I created accounts elsewhere with real spam/virus filters, I've only had 1 virus in the last month (when I checked a manxnet account! - which Norton sorted)

Get accounts with:

www.safe-mail.net

www.nospammail.net

www.fastmail.fm

www.ziplip.com (for secure stuff)

www.hushmail.com (for secure stuff again)

The Manxnet spam master is doing my head in, if I ever meet him/her in the pub I'll be telling them about their prissyness!(just kidding, I hope its a machine) They let viruses through but block stuff from my brother in law, calling it spam 98%?? how does that work?

Just be careful what you open attachmentwise, I never open anything unless I am expecting it, ZIP files are sooo old hat, I mean who zips things up these days? Hackers and virus makers, thats about all.

I used that spybot and it killed my AOL messenger (my only pc form of communication with my MAC friends) anyone know how to fix it??

My manx.net account is also doing my head in and I've virtually stopped using it. I've various other accounts including AOL and Hotmail and have no trouble at all with dodgy emails and viruses.

If you were a webmaster, you'd use it a lot dude, it's a hell of a lot quicker to upload a zip file then extract the files on the server than it is to FTP the lot uncompressed.

Uhh, zip files are used everywhere. It's the easiest way of distributing a number of files in a single archive. Not to mention the fact that it's a compressed format.

I've had a shitload of dodgy emails today - the ones that spammaster didn't ban (or whatever it called it - TBH I was just impressed that it automatically binned them, I didn't realise it did that?) Norton got.

Most were to a yahoo addy, the rest manxnet.

only a doof would be transfering/storing files unzipped

Oooooerrr, soz guys, I just dont use it anymore. :o but you are right I am not a webmaster. We have a 80gb 'thing' in our machine so file storage isnt really an issue.

oh dear, oh dear!

it would appear that if you moan about these dodgy emails, then you get more!!

i get up this morning, check my mail as normal, 12 of the sods!!

at least spammaster has started deleting the .pif files for me, it is starting to grate on me slightly now though!

one said "is this about you .zip", most said "your details", another said "i've found your file".

is there any way i can sign up to another account, and have my mail re-directed to it. much the same as you would phone calls, if you know what i mean. instaed of having to mail everyone i know to tell them i've moved?

declan, unisol? you guys will know a hell of a lot more about these things than i, any help will be greatfully recieved!
