access55 Posted July 10, 2004 Posted July 10, 2004 .PIF and .SCR are Executable file types meaning they are actual programs (read virusus) that will run on your machine the same as a .EXE they are used by Virus writers to try to dodge systems which block .EXE's/COM etc etc Google for Executable file types and you will see there are more than you think, this problem is not going away the best you can do as a home user is run an reputable up to date virus scanner + firewall and make sure your machine is kept up to date patch wise oh and don;t use Internet Explorer if you can avoid it there are lots of other more secure browsers out there. Edited for TYPO
the mo beats experience Posted July 10, 2004 Author Posted July 10, 2004 I've got norton which updates itself a couple of times a week, its not infecting me, its just that it clogs up my inbox and is a general irritation!
sirdick Posted July 10, 2004 Posted July 10, 2004 Don't worry mo I keep getting e-mails like this aswell. I'm running AVG now, did download the trial of Norton to see if it was much cop, but I didn't find it that user friendly (I'm not a novice at computers, but I don't want to be scratching around trying to figure out if I have a virus or not). Anyway, AVG is good, let's me know where a virus is and how to get rid. And it's a fully prog which be free! For a while I was getting a fair few spams on manx.net but when they brought in the master they slowed down, nothing gets through.. but that seems the problem. I get mails from SM with one or two not-sures in, and I don't know whether there are more or not - including real mails. I'm not too sure about this Firewall stuff, can anyone give me advice/info on them? Also, updates aren't advertised well enough for regular users from Microsoft.
the mo beats experience Posted July 14, 2004 Author Posted July 14, 2004 this is the latest hot honey tryin to infect me with her wares, i'm sooooo in demand! "Hi,Ready to accept a new friend? :-)Attached file will tell you everything.Have a good day, Christina" the attachment she has is an information.hta file.

geo Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 Sorry Unisol but it it isn't obvious to me that this isn't paypal. For this idiot, please spell out the obvious bit Thanks Its down to recognising site names. Paypalls site is www.paypal.com, their log in page is https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run and not http://secure06.paypal.dmgl.org/.../pp/ . The dmgl.org should ring allarm bells if you use paypal regularly. Be vigilant when it comes to e-mails and offers on line. Geo
Uni Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 Correct, PayPal specifically specifies you should check that you always and only login to PayPal via their secure site - which is https://www.paypal.com https - hype text transfer protocol secure Domain paypal.com which is the official site domain name. Fake address - http://secure06.paypal.dmgl.org/.../pp/ You can see they are using subdomains (secure06 & paypal) to confuse the security and authenticity of paypal. But as your can clearly read - its not paypal.com but dmgl.org. If in doubt, forward the email to the paypal support.
MELT Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 this is all very helpfull, i regularly use paypal, and would probably not have noticed the differing addresses. i wouldn't have done anything with it though, i'd have waited till i next used it to purchase something to make any changes they wanted. but this is very alarming, so many infected files, so many people trying to have you off, its like being in liverpool! Mo you are high on my manx net spammaster list... your emails are always getting stuck :s is there secret xxxx links your sending me only the ones ya asked for, big boy, anal kings and snatch addicts!
