The Books Of Stephen King

I have been a big fan of Stephen King's writing for a long time but would just like to see what people think of the newer books. I must admit that there are quite a few from recent times that I would never pick up again (Dreamcatcher and The Cell) unlike the earlier ones which I adored such as Needful Things.

However, when I felt like I had lost all hope of a good book, then came along the Dark Tower Series. Oh.. My... God... I never wanted those books to end. But then having spoken to other fans of the author, they thought those books were pants!

So I'm just wanting to know peoples thoughts on their fave/worst Stephen King books and I'd also be intrigued to know about whether you rated the Dark Tower Series

I like the way the Dark Tower stuff is interwoven into his other works, but I didn't really rate the Dark Tower itself compared to his usual output (and the ending was shite).

I loved The Stand, and also enjoyed Hearts in Atlantis and Tommyknockers. I have bought Lisey's Storybut cannot get into it (to be fair, I often struggle to get into his books, but once I do I can't stop reading them).

Up there with The Stand is Black House, which he co-authored.

The only thing I'm thankful to Stephen King for is that I was introduced to the work of Peter Straub.

Actually, that's a lie - I do like (or did like when I was younger, haven't read them in ages) a lot of his older stuff, but having misguidedly picked up Cell a year or so ago and read it - all the good things he'd written were wiped away in an instant.

Quite possibly that was the worst book ever! I'm a huge bookworm and if I don't like a book (any book by any author) I will still read it. The Cell I left for ages and went back to after I think a year! I just couldn't believe the twaddle that was happening.

Esp because I loved his early horror stuff so much. The likes of IT and Misery are books that I pick again and again just because they draw you in so easily and you're there with the characters

I enjoyed the Bachman books, Tommyknockers just dragged on and on.

To be honest, I'm not a SK fan.

Will totally agree with you on the fact that the ending was SHITE! In fact I nearly threw the book out the window at that point. Was very disappointed considering I had been riveted by the story so much

So what was it about the Dark Tower series you didn't like, if you don't mind me asking?

The Stand... what a classic book. And the Tommyknockers meant that I couldn't read it before bedtime because it gave me nightmares LOL

Do it!!! Honestly I stayed well away from them for ages but it was a recommendation from a friend that got me into them. They are not his usual style at all. Not really horror/mind games but more fantasy. It was just interesting seeing him going into a different genre and then linking it back through all his other books (well... some of them anyway)

Give it a go :D
