I like [and love] lots of different genres of music.   When my heads not quite right, I go back to first loves.   This is Jussi Bjorling singing "Au Fond Du Temple Saint" from Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers"...never heard any other version of this aria that could match it, until recently.  I literally can't choose between the two version, but hey, I don't have to, it really does not matter:

I suspect this is an acquired taste, but this version, on David Byrne's quizzical album Growing Backwards, is on my play list.

Wow...blown away.   For me your link didn't work but I managed to find a version based on you description, and include it here.   I get your point about it being an acquired taste, his counterpart is Rufus Wainwright, whom I have long enjoyed.   This is a truly excellent rendition of "Au Fond du temple saint".   I appreciate the expansion of my thinking [accidentally learned how to post video here correctly, so thanks for that also!].
