Nosferatu Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Before I moved to the island I was a keen player of inline hockey . When I first moved here I asked around if there was any teams or players on the island and found nothing other than the occasional "somebody else was asking about that a while ago" or "whats that then ?". Well after a few years of doing nowt about it I thought I might as well see if anyone is interested in the game with the idea of trying to kick start something . Given the number of people that play field hockey and the fair number of skaters I thought that there may well be some interest To start at the obvious point for those who don't know what Inline/Street/Skater hockey entails , it is basically ice hockey on roller skates using either a puck or ball and depending on which set of rules you are using full contact or non contact . The governing bodies in the UK are Non Contact version using a puck (BIPHA) or Full Contact Version using a ball (BISHA) Ideally its best to play in a sports centre or a purpose built rink but a nice tarmacced flat surface is as good a place to start as any (although sticks and skate wheels wear out very quickly) . Basic equipment is pretty obvious ie skates and a stick , gloves are recommended as are leg guards but for the sake of just starting out not totally essential . If you are interested or know somebody else who has been wondering if there is anyone else over here that is into this sport then please reply . Cheers
Nosferatu Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 Time for a bit of thread necromancy . After starting a group on facebook I eventually managed to find a few other hockey fans . There are currently around 6-10 of us playing regularly on a Thursday night down at Peel QE2 school 1930-2100 . We have a few old gits who have played the game for years and a few lads brand new to the game but from a skaters background . Things are going pretty well so far and we're looking to expand a bit and hopefully get more people down. We're a friendly bunch and generally head for a pint or two after playing. If you're over 16 and fancy giving it a shot feel free to contact me on here or take a look on the facebook page . First 2 sessions are free then if you like it and decide to turn up regularly it's £5 per session to cover the hall hire . All you need is a pair of skates to start with as we have a few spare sticks for people to borrow at each session . Shin pads & elbow pads are recommended but not totally necessary . Cheers.
The Phantom Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 There's an Eastern European guy called Miro who works at Carrefour. He was a mean Ice Hockey player in his day apparently. Might be worth hunting him down if he is not playing already.
Nosferatu Posted February 14, 2013 Author Posted February 14, 2013 Cheers Phantom , Miro is indeed one of the regular players and he is definitely a class above the rest of us . I think he played in Slovakia & France both pretty decent leagues .
TheDruid-3X3 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 How is Inline Skating doing as a Sport in IOM not to mention Inline Hockey? 3X3
the stinking enigma Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Put it this way, i'm one of the best and certainly most experienced players of both sports on the island and i don't even know what they are
