Its been announced that one of the shiping firms is to relocate and shed staff on the IOM, Are a big insurance company up by Shoprite about to do the same. I would love to see Mr Bell minister at the treasury answer this question. Mr Bell are you aware of any moves being made by the UK Government to attract offshore finance houses to relocate back to the UK. ;)

It was in the Examiner, which I unusually picked up and read today at work. It's Maersk I think (whoever they are)

As to insurance companies by Shoprite, if he's talking about CMI, he's about 9 months behind the times as they shed 75% of their staff and closed to new business a long time ago.

I should know, Mrs Ans was one of them, although we're both chuft about the redundancy package :)

I don't understand why chu....err, crumlin doesn't just ask Mr Bell himself.

and if the EU Savings Directive comes through there will be even more of them off aswell.....wont need to worry about an all Island speed limit then..there will be no-one left. Switch the light off on your way out Ned.

I would love to ask Mr Bell the question,But then I would be exposing myself, some of you must be from the Ramsey area, and could have the chance to ask him as your MHK. I could ask the question, but would have to put my correct name to the question and that would be suicide.

If any of you still want cheap housing, wait twelve months, plenty then :o

Ans, did I meet you this morning by any chance, SGW

Not unless you were cunningly disguised as the coffee machine at work.

Crumlin: The fact that you're loathe to put your name to anything kinda destroys any credibility you thought you had. If you thought you were right, there would be no problem with it.

Ans, could be something in this thread, most of our work is in facilities and we have had several pre booked large contracts put on hold due to the possibility of the companies relocating. I to have heard that CMI are to close up completely on the IOM.

Developers of office blocks would normally rent them out on lease for the first seven years, but lately some of the new ones that are still empty have been put up for sale, no new ones being built now or have gone to planning.

Maybe you could ask Cumlin since you clearly know who he is.

However, there is a difference between a slow down in the building of new offices - you would n't build any when there are still some standing empty would you? and the closure of existing ones.

Has anyone noticed that with certain people the news of new jobs is seen as more comeovers and an increase in houseprices and generally a bad thing.

Yet the same people seem to see every job loss announcement as the signal for the death of the Manx Economy and a return to the days of serfdom and the Black Death.

What seems to be happening is a consolidation of the offshore market with companies merging their Isle of Man and Channel Island operations. Many will choose to close their Manx offices but many will seek to consolidate their operations in the Island - as Barclays has.

I think we'll see a period where this instability will lead to a fairly static level of employment in this sector.

The more important question is whether the doom and gloom merchants are correct about the impact of the European Tax Thingymajig or the up beat response from business leaders and the Government is more accurate.
