Floyd Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I used to read books.. or atleast go through phases of reading loads of books and then for some reason not finding time to read (although all I was doing was watching TV instead ). Anyway, the last 3 or so years I've been listening to audiobooks on a regular almost daily basis. I've just started Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby which I'm liking so far.. I just finished listening to Neil Gaimans Stardust and Neverwhere.. the latter being a real favourite of mine. Anyone else a keen audiobook user and what would you recommend?
The Old Git Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Busting Vegas, Pies and Prejudice, A Short History of Nearly Everything have been three recent favorites. How do you buy yours? I have am Audible "two books a month" type account as I find it works out cheaper that buying them ad hoc. Mind you, I have a pile of books to catch up with though

After a while they offered me 3 months at half price. I'm about to cancel again for a while. Hoping they will offer me it cheap again. I am not very good at reading. Loads of books I have listened to unabridged from Audible which I would have struggled to read.
Addie Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 My daughter has recommended that I try audio books as I need to be more disciplined on the cross trainer and I get so bored - I haven't a TV or anything nearby and I've tried reading when exercising but it's impossible . Audio books would be perfect - she says. Where does one get them from? I love spy type things or murder mysteries. edited to replace audible with audiobooks LOL
pongo Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 audible.co.uk ETA: when you sign up choose UK as your country even with the IOM Post Code and even though IOM is available as a country option. Otherwise you will find that some books are not available to you due to rights issues - some books not available outside UK due to intellectual property issues. Putting UK works fine with the IOM Post Code. Putting UK will not make any difference apart from that.
ItsyBitsy Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I found them very good when bouts of insomnia strike and faced with massive piles of ironing, very relaxing Most libraries have them now too which saves you having to buy.
Floyd Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 I have used Audible in the past but tend to use iTunes these days.. just through ease of use.. but I may try audible again. Really into Juliet, Naked at the moment... really good listen (read ) Pies and Prejudice.. I'll give that a go.. just read a snippet of it from amazon. I find I mainly listen when I couldn't be reading anyway.. journey to work and back, walking etc..

If you're a regular "reader" then having an Audible subscription makes sense as you can pretty well choose any book, whatever the cost, on your monthly plan. I'm on a two books a month plan for £15 and the last two I chose for October would have cost over £50 if purchased normally. It's easy to download them and then just drop them into iTunes.
