Im not sure if its legal but it certainley goes on and ive never heard of anyone getting arrested for it ! Best ask someone at DAFF or what ever they are called these days. Lots of divers arent keen for conservation reasons although youd have a job to catch much id reckon.

It is illegal under local Fisheries bye-laws

That's a shame. I can remember as a child watching a couple of wet suited chaps bring up some massive flatties (at Garwick) at an un disclosed shore many years ago. They were amazing looking fish. It was all for research of course.

The Scientists said their experiment on Spear caught fish tasted ace.

Clearly this may become a serious threat.

I propose the creation of an entire new government department - working in partnership with other agencies - to detect and confiscate spears and other sharp objects.

£5 million for a consultancy ( from off island as doubtless there will be no one able to undertake the work here )

A staff of around 100 extra pen pushers should do it.

Plus a nice second rate website- again from off island as doubtless there will be no one able to undertake the work here.

Possibly www.say-no-to-sharp-pointy-stick-things.com

The isle of man sea fisheries (technical measures) bye-law 2000 part IV section 21 (2) states:-

Nor have any such equipment in his possession in such circumstance as to satisfy the Court before which he is charged that he intended at the time to catch or kill sea-fish by means thereof”.

N.B. this information is given under fisheries acts, regulations and bye-laws only and the importation and or possession of a spear gun may have further ramifications under acts, regulations and bye-laws enforced by the Isle of Man Constabulary.

What about spearing wayward jocks on the beach at low water :)

When I were a lad I used to use a home made spear made discreetly in metalwork at school, mask snorkel and flippers to catch dabs off the Granville steps and war memorial. The sandy bottom was heaving in them if you knew what you were looking for. Putting 4 on the ol'mans plate, grilled in milk and white pepper, straight outta the sea put a real smile on his face.

So is a three-foot eleven-inch spear acceptable?

Standard government pace on everything except price rises.
