ManxTaxPayer Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Wow, Andy Murray. The best player in the world. Amazing.
notwell Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 As I said above sadly Murray Is beaten before it starts at the moment against Djokovic. The one guy who should be winning half the slam events at the moment and he is mentally owned by Djokovic. If he can address that mental block he can win a lot of slam events over the next five years. Big shift in Murray with respect to the above. With Federer and Nadal finished and the others a level below Murray and Djokovic there is no reason (injuries permitting) that Murray cannot take half the slam events over the next 2 - 3 years.
Shill Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Really strange final yesterday. Novak looked well out of sorts, almost like he knew he couldnt win. Murray looked very tired when he came on court understandably after his tough semi final 24 hours before. Just goes to show that sports like this are mental as well as physical. I have never seen so many unforced errors from Novak. Fair play to Murray though coming out and taking it to him. He has played some incredible tennis this year and thoroughly deserves #1 spot. I would love to see Murray win the Australian Open, 5 finals is a lot to not win it.
woolley Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Djokovic has been like that for most of the year. Really strange as though he has lost all motivation.

Federer and Nadal, I agree. From what I have seen this year, I am also doubtful that Djokovic can return to his imperious best. Time waits for no man though, and just as you think you can relax having conquered those whose feats you aspired to for years and bettered them, some younger upstart will be there to knock you down too, as evidenced by Murray's struggle to close out against Raonic.
Shill Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Raonic aside I dont see anyone making that much of an impact. Nishikori is decent but has failed to make that much of an impression in grand slams. Del Potro may come good again. Wawrinka's best days are behind him. Cilic possibly but like Nishikori I just dont see him getting to finals. Raonic is the best young talent around and will get better, I see him winning soon if he keeps his motivation up.
notwell Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Warinka has that ability to have an unbelievable couple of weeks now and again. I suspect Raonic will struggle to beat Murray or Djokovic over 5 sets. I genuinely think Murray can add quite a number of Slams to his list if he stays injury free. He's the complete player now.
Shill Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 My only concern with Murray is his 2nd serve. His all round game has improved for sure, he is dictating points now where as he used to just defend and hit that 'one more ball' Raonic has the talent, he just needs to believe he can win. He had several chances against Murray but just didn't convert the points at the right times in the match. I think Wimbledon will be his best chance of a slam next year. I agree with you about Wawrinka, if he can stay injury free he may have one more slam in him. Del Potro is the one to watch next season, incredibly talented and getting back to full match fitness.
woolley Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Two things I've been impressed with about Murray. Mentally he has overcome his demons and now knows he can win. That's a big thing. Previously he came up against Federer or Djokovic and he visibly shrank before them. Not anymore. As a by-product he seems a lot more relaxed and even a bit more likeable. His returns of even the most venemous serves are phenomenal. He now seems to be able to turn even the fastest serves around and into winners. The boy done good.
Shill Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 His return of service has never been in question. That is his biggest strength for sure. He just knows where to return the ball to put him on the front foot, even against the bigger servers. SPOTY for a record 3rd time ?
notwell Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 He must have a chance. I can't think of many people who will challenge. Perhaps Mo Farah? Chris Froome got to be in the picture too.
Shill Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Well it's either Murray or an Olympian. Jason Kenny, Laura Trott or Alistair Brownlee Murray is odds on mind you.
Bobbie Bobster Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Well it's either Murray or an Olympian. I would've voted for his nibs, but that tat is skanky!
woolley Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 It is good to have a British winner at last.
