zephyr Posted July 23, 2004 Author Posted July 23, 2004 Well if you haven't seen anything of these yet you are missing out. The museum 'do' was well attended but very formal Port st Mary was more relaxed and loads of people got up to dance Laxey was really good (they must be starved of culture down there) Started off with Avel Dro playing a half hour set (some of the Manx dancers tried valiently to dance Breton style) Bock Yaun Fannee did 6 dances which (even though I say so myself) went down well King Chiaullee played a set consisting of tunes from both of their CD's, they were bloody good, even the musicians from Avel Dro were stunned by the tightness of the music (no it wasn't the Guinness that made it tight) Reticent parents were dragged up to dance by kids but found that they enjoyed it and came back for more. Avel Dro finished the night off, the floor was full of people moving hither and thither (it could loosely be called dancing) Come on people if you haven't seen this lot yet get your arses to either Peel tonight or Ramsey tomorrow. By the way cheers to Stav for the kebab last night it went down really well.
Ringwraith Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 Very dissappointed with Avel Dro, not much variation in the set at Ramsey. There were far too many chairs in that tent as well, could have been much better. Whoever organised it needs to improve next year.
zephyr Posted July 28, 2004 Author Posted July 28, 2004 I agree totally with your sentiments about the chairs. Have to disagree about Avel Dro though, they were good, considering that up until a couple of months ago they didn't know whether they were coming or not (nobody from Yn Chruinnaght told them anything). Sat night was a bit of a damp squib, I enjoyed it but then again I was three parts pissed. The best night was at Laxey where King Chiaullee also played (they went to the tent on Fri and were told there wasn't time for them to play, don't think they'll be hurrying up to go back)
Ringwraith Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 I booked my ticket specially to see Avel Dro. I like Breton music and was looking forward to the big set / band experience, instead they turned up very late and played a very average set. The tent was great, two sections, good toilet facilities, big bar but those chairs killed it, the sound level was another thing that let it down, too quiet at the back. What amazes me is that Ramsey had a street party with fireworks and bands not 2 weeks before and this could have been incorporated into crunchy. The quay could have been pedestrianised for the week and it could have been proper bo. Yet another example of p-iss poor planning from events organisers on this rock, when will they ever get it right?
Bill Posters Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 They were really good outside the Mines. And it was free. And the sound level was fine at the back. And the dancing was good... And... And...
zephyr Posted July 30, 2004 Author Posted July 30, 2004 Ringwraith. Avel Dro did NOT turn up late, they were first on stage to sound check. They were there at about 20:00 The running order was changed at the last minute. The chruin organisers really need to get their act together, it's that or it will be lost Bill I missed the mines do, I felt like xxxxx so didn't show my face till the evening.

I mentioned that because people seemed to be killing time before they came on and the guys near the sound control were saying "no bloody sign of this French lot yet then!". My other comments still stand.
zephyr Posted July 30, 2004 Author Posted July 30, 2004 At the start of the evening Juan was having trouble getting the sound system switched on, ya boy from Peel never showed his face. Maybe I was pissed but David who was doing the mix joined in the singing and he was at the mixing desk, didn't see anyone else who was willing to take it on. Now King Chiaullee are in L'orient really enjoying themselves. I would hate to think that the Island will become the laughing stock of the Celtic nations because of this year. The set out of the tent was as the last time Yn Chruin was held in the tent, what was that 3-4 years ago. As a nation we ought to look into making Yn Chruin the best festival of all the Celtic Nations, we can get gov backing so no worry about money, we are the best and central to all Celtic nations so we should be the hub of all festivities.
Bill Posters Posted July 30, 2004 Posted July 30, 2004 so we should be the hub of all festivities. hear hear
Snaipyr Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Yn Chruinnaght used to be brilliant when it was in the big marquee. Then it moved to The Grand Island, and it's been downhill ever since. The committee members worked hard (they are all volunteers) but as is the case with any committe, I presume (from what I've heard) there have been disagreements about what they want it to be. Some wanted it to be smaller, more Manx, less noise and drunks daring to join in the dancing. I personally loved the 'alternative' night and the 'Survivors Ceili' - as well as the more serious stuff. And I see no harm in fired-up locals wanting to enjoy the ceili dancing. Why shouldn't they? Must make a nice change from Nightlife, and I've never seen any trouble. My personal dislike are choirs - always reminds me of Church. Maybe the methodists have taken control of the committee - "You will sit in rows of chairs, listen to gaelic choirs and NOT enjoy yourself!"
Snaipyr Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Censorship's got a bit harsh hasn't it? Fancy having to edit because xxxxxlife isn't acceptable.
