Matt Bawden
Is it just me whose eyelids suddenly grew heavy after reading "...unleashed a wave of conspiracy theories"? You are not alone, which in turn could espouse the conspiracy theory in itself
The Border Terrier
Can a car be hacked, yes. No problems. However, there needs to be a 'conduit' such as the manufacturers ECU interrogation unit plugged into the EOBD (European On-Board Diagnostics) socket on the car. It only needs someone to break into the car and fit the hardware (about 1/2 size of a laptop) and then control remotely via 'bluetooth'. It's difficult to circumnavigate the immobiliser, but if the driver uses his own keys to start the car it's easy to control the vehicle (e.g. brakes/lights/transmission/steering and engine inc. accelerator etc.) remotely. Common systems typically have a 30m range. I would confidently suggest that most car dealerships have the hard/software to do this. It's used to repair faults/upgrade software 'fixes' by the manufacturer.
