Those were the days. Proper racing.

Deffo, some incredible driving in the Prost,Senna,Mansell era.

I watched a documentary a while back on Jim Clarke. the man's ability and courage were outstanding. They were at that time racing on crossply tires toosweat.gif

Indeed. We could debate who is the greatest F1 driver of all time, and it would be tough to go against Fangio given his amazing record and the short time that he actually raced. But for me, Clark has a strong argument. He won two championships in F1, obviously. he won in touring cars driving a Lotus Cortina. He won Indy. He won the Tasman Cup series. He won in sports cars. Had he been spared in 1968 I think there is little doubt that he would have won the F1 championship, as his team mate Hill went on to do in the dominant Lotus 49/Cosworth DFV .

You are right about his courage, too. He confided in Colin Chapman that each time he closed the hotel room door to go to the circuit, he wondered if he would ever return to open it again. He had a dread of Spa, and had several grizzly experiences there. Despite that, he was a master of that circuit, winning four years running 1962 - 1965.
