FCMR Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 Many times we read in the press or hear on the Mannin Line about the likes of Peel, Ramsey and Castletown dying, lack of shops, employment and nightlife. Possible answer, If the DOT were to make parking difficult and expensive in the Douglas area, maybe some companies might think about relocating to other areas of the Island to save on costs and ease of transport for staff.
Speckled Frost Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 It would be more effective for the government to actually move some more of its own departments outside of Douglas and be an example to other companies. Also, the townspeople have to show a willingness to move with the times too. The people of Ramsey didn't.
When Skies Are Grey Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 I dont really think that Ramsey is geared up for an influx of people to be honest...there is no parking infra-structure and more importantly no sandwich shops!
When Skies Are Grey Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 Hmmmm...of varying quality of output! and one of them gets in a strop if there are more than three people in the shop....oh and there's bar logo if you have the luxury of being able to wait 2 hours for your lunch....
Ant Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 I would agree with you regarding parking WSAG. I haven't lived in Ramsey for very long but I like it here, it's a nice place . I might like to see the Pier re-opened, but I will confess to not knowing the full story behind it's closure, I gather there are structural problems with it is this right?, and if so how bad are these problems?.

FCMR Posted July 23, 2004 Author Posted July 23, 2004 The pier is past its sell by date, and the Government should not waste any more money on it, the answer is to drop it
WilDDog Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 FCMR Wrote The pier is past its sell by date, and the Government should not waste any more money on it, the answer is to drop it The pier is past its sell by date because the Government haven't spent any money on it, you're wrong in your assumption that they have. The only money that's been spent on it is to knock the end off it and supposedly make everything safe.
Bill Posters Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 The pier is past its sell by date because the Government haven't spent any money on it Correct. FFS it's the ONLY one we've got. It is part of our heritage. I'd sooner we preserve that and knock down King and Queens Court. Get some style back in to Ramsey.
Bill Posters Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 some companies might think about relocating to other areas of the Island to save on costs and ease of transport for staff. IF I live in say, Douglas and work for a company based say, in Douglas, and they move to say, Ramsey, how does that help ease my transport? (Bearing in mind that the largest concentration of population IS around Douglas/Onchan)
Educa Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 I won't pretend to be an expert on the Ramsey Pier subject, but it does seem to me that Ramsey is in dire need of regeneration and saving this well know landmark has got to have many positives. having said that......if you take a walk on ramsey beach or pier...would you be able to spot any florescent marine life couresy of bnfl
Declan Posted July 24, 2004 Posted July 24, 2004 It is all very well talking about moving out of town, but would employees want to. I live in Port Erin, if I was forced to work in Port Erin it would make my life more difficult - having to travel into town of an evening for football, to see a gig or go to the pub would be a pain. Plus I would then have to give up Saturdays for shopping etc. Castletown and Ballasalla would make no difference to my daily routine in that I'd have to get up at about the same time to commute. And Peel and Ramsey would be impossible, so I'd effectively be sacked. Even the Industrial Estate by B&Q would be a pain in the arse.

Yeah because parking in Douglas isn't difficult or expensive
